Re: Question About Subcontracting

Agreed. And it's taking a risk. Advantage Framing(now closed) and Advantage Construction, hire out other framing contractors on big jobs, because it's a lot easier than paying the huge LNI fees, and doing all the taxes and payrolls on separate framers. like when we had 60 or 70 people working. The people we hire must be licensed and bonded contractors, so they have to be legal. For the handful of employees that are on our payroll, they are all checked to be legal. It's a huge liability, that's not worth the risk.

I just wish the govt would decide to enforce the current laws. It is very unfair when one contractor tries to do everything right and your competing against contractors who dont give a crap because they will never be caught and can keep their labor prices down.
I know damn well I would get caught in a minute if filled up the crews with illegals, thats just my luck.

I'm going to call BS on this.An Illegal Immigrant will not have a SS# (at least not one of his own)...ITIN's?Give me a break.Remember it is in fact ILLEGAL to employ an ILLEGAL immigrant.

Your buddy use's them because they are cheap labor.Period.

Most illegal's that are here will work for less than a legal citizen.Does that make it right to not pay a skilled LEGAL citizen a fair wage? The drywall sub I use pay's his guy's 25.00 to 30.00 an hour.Could he use illegal's that will work for a fraction of that?Sure.Would the work be of equal quality? It very well could be.The difference is he runs a legit business.

Believe it or not doing the right thing still matters to some people.

I'll completely agree with you on that, many people check their subs employees here in WA. They'll flat out say no when all the illegals show up. And in the way of paying taxes, FIT is taken out by the employer and in WA we don't have a state income tax. It's all sales tax. So you could be illegal with no job but you'll still pay state taxes, any time you buy things. BUT it doesn't change the fact that they ARE illegal. We take all of our documents to the city, and they verify the employees citizenship. Then when INS comes, we have what the city provided as proof that we did our job, that and our employees are required to carry an SSC at all times. That's for their own good, if they get checked without one they'll be locked up until they can be verified as legal.
