Pump Jacks, Ladder Jacks, Or Scaffolding

Pump jacks, ladder jacks, or scaffolding???

What does everyone prefer?

I’m sure you’re talking a large scale job but I thought I’d throw this out.

Don’t use the new Pivot ladder tool for a ladder jack. They advertise you can, but I used mine for a very small fast set up to clean a light globe on my apartment. Never again.

I would much rather have scaffolding but pump jacks work. Although, I've seen a few areas that have banned the use of pump jacks.

I used pump jacks a good many years ago. I think they were pump jacks? It’s a setup that’s attached to 2 extension ladders similar to ladder jacks with a walk plank. A man stands at the bottom of each ladder and pumps a lever with their foot which raises the jacks and walk plank from the ground. I don’t know how else to explain it.

It worked, but I’ll bet their not OSHA friendly anymore?

Roof jacks are good.

Pump jacks work well, if you brace them right.

saw three guys go 25 ft up and 50 ft wide on two 24 ft picks once, no braces, I was about to say something and the customer started talking to me, got side tracked, heard a loud snap, far right poll went, one guy in the middle got a sliding board to the ground, one guy on the left thought he would be smart and jump up and grap the soffit scab, as he hung there the left pick went down as the center poll went, rocking of a lonely second story deck joist then swated him off the house like a fly.

Remarkably no one was hurt seriously. But then you have to lose a limb to be seriously hurt in my book.

Although I have to add the Bobjack is the best for a roof.

I've used extension ladders, ladder jacks, and plank set-up my whole life. Everytime I have to set them up I always wonder if there was a better/stable way for working on second stories when siding. I guess I dont like the fact ya need 2 guys to get the 20-24' planks up effeciently and the sway/wobble when your up there.

Scaffolding would probably be best when set up properly, but right now buying a whole set-up especially to do the side of a 2 story is just not practical for cost and time to set up as fast as siding gets installed. I've looked at pump jacks, but even with them the initial cost for everything and then time to set up safely seems to out weigh the end result.

I am however looking at wall jacks for our garages and addition jobs, they appear to set up quickly and would make setting trusses/rafters and roofing alot easier IMO since you could essentially walk the entire length of the building and even set it up to go all the way around, just would have to have alot of 2x12 planks to keep on hand.
