Pulling Permits

I was talking to my brother-in-law and he was telling me about how he's planning on get his CSL (he calls it a GC license) So he can charge unlicensed contractors to use his # to get permits WTMothaF!!! These guys are part of the problem that we (legitimate contractors) have a hard time getting our price. Not to mention the poor HO! There's gotta be something we can do to make it more difficult for these clowns to get licenses.

Re: Pulling Permits

I agree, my dad has a friend who is unlicensed and he was telling people he is a GC. I said no hes not, hes not licensed so he cant pull permits. My dad said yeah but if he needs a permit you can pull it for him. Thats not how it works dude.

What really burns my is my dad is a electrician so alot of times when he working someone will say I need some work done like a roof, deck, ect. GC work basicly. Of course my dad gives them the phone # to his unlicensed friend, he will do it when Im standing right there. WTF is this, I guess its still in his head that Im a kid.

Re: Pulling Permits

Hiring a "license" is pretty common around here. The licensed guy is still the responsible party and is the guy that would have to answer to the Building official, judge, etc. Same insurance requirements and you still have to show up on the job if you want to keep you license.

Letting someone else use your license is illegal. He could be jailed or fined or both!

Re: Pulling Permits

Until the general public become a bit more informed on why its important to do business with a real business person, one who conforms to the local, regional and federal laws governing his business, the prostitution of trades will continue unchecked.

Your dad, unfortunately, seems to be part of the problem, not the solution.

I wonder why so many of us in this business feel its O.K. to work for white collar families, whose members don't drive 3rd hand beat-up work trucks, have full medical insurance coverage, attend private schools, and can afford to remodel their existing homes or build new, especially in today's market.

Why are so many of us satisfied with what amounts to a paycheck in exchange for a retirement, secured with real assets, for high quality higher education for our children, for medical coverage that won't bankrupt our families, and for someone's cast off, out of date American Dream.

This is the Land of Opportunity, why then, do so many of us refuse to make more of that opportunity? Why do we reason with ourselves that our competition is right in their approach to business when we know from first-hand experience that it is anything but right?

Maybe for the new year, some of us will resolve to change our ways of doing business and become a bit more law abiding and orient ourselves to the future of our families, and not just the survival of our egos.

C.C.R.

Remember this. He needs to have insurance and once he has a job go "BAD" he will be out of business and broke. My brother has asked me from time to time if I would pull a permit for him. I tell him if I'm not doing the job I'm not putting my livelihood on the line.

Re: Pulling Permits

Speaking for Florida - licensing is just a way for the state gov't to make more $$$ - shakedown, plain and simple

Anyone with the $$ and a little intelligence can get licensed - you might never have picked up a hammer, but if you can afford a class that teaches you how to pass the test, can afford the test, can afford the insurance, then BAM, you're a LICENSED CONTRACTOR, who can't hammer a nail

I'm licensed, by the way

don't ask if I can hammer a nail

Around here the biggie is that you know how to pay your suppliers and subs. That's ok with me.

They don't currently have a state-wide license in PA, but I suspect it's coming soon. Sounds like it will be loads of fun.
