Problem With NO Permit-----

we just did a siding and roofing job and as usual told the H.O. we would get the permit. he insited that he get it so i said ok. anyway, after talking with himtoday about another job he recommended me for,he informed me that he applied for the permit but never bothered to pay for it and pick it up. normally i would'nt care but i am doing a house on the same street in two weeks and am getting the permit for that. what worries me is if the inspector comes to inspect this house he will somehow remember that a permit was applied for at the other house up the street and never picked up or paid for. should i just leave well enough alone? what does the building dept do when someone apllies for a permit and it gets approved but never picked up and paid for?

That is of course, there is an "Application" with the HO's signature on it. If not........

AS Mickeyco has said, not in so many words, leave well enough alone. Government Employees generally WILL NOT go beyond the Scope of Work for any particular day. They are not inclined to make extra work for themselves. Unless they see the opportunity for a bit of "Professional Compensation" to negate violations. Ahem...

Our inspectors never come out to look at completed windows siding or roofs.

I always pull the permits for MY jobs, this negates all of the what if's? or the but's. It also depends on where your located, here for that type of work a ho can't pull those permits unless he or she was doing the work themselves. Is it your responsability to have said permit posted before work began?

Re: Problem With NO Permit-----

Get the permit and get it inspected. Around here the inspectors see a list of permits pulled in their area and will make a drive-by to check for scope if their schedules allow.

Remember, your client might have the best of intentions, but ultimately, its your responsibility as the contracted company. Not his. In fact, it might even be against the rules of your jurisdiction to work under a HO permit.

Quit stalling and just get it done. You'll feel better. If the HO gets upset, just let him know you're the one ultimately responsible and its your reputation on the line. Doing the right thing is your standard business policy, even when it seems to circumvent the wishes of the home owner.

He only applied for the permit. it was approved but he never paid for it or picked it up. its as if a H.O. applied for a permit, got approved and then decided not to do the work. what happens when a permit is NOT claimed(paid for)? does it expire?

Nothing and sometimes here. I wouldnt worry about it unless something is said. As malco said most of these guys won't do anything more on the job then they have to.

BUT....As Double-A has presented.......Deal with a little hassle now and get it over with.......Or.......Wager against anything happening but if it does, deal with a bigger hassle later.

Piece of MIND does factor in.

But I can be a betting man and therefore would sit it out.

Re: Problem With NO Permit-----

We no longer allow homeowners to pull permits. If there is permitted work, it's part of the cost of the bid and we pull them. If this means we lose a contract, so be it.

Can not go wrong with this method.

Re: Problem With NO Permit-----

If the job requires a permit we pull it if the H.O. decides they know best and don't want the permit we walk.
