Hi,
I'm pretty new to the biz and I don't think I'm making enough. So how much should I charge for:
framing
roofing
siding
trim
cabinets
and how much should I pay my guys?

And how much should my insurance cost, and my light bill
How much should I pay for a truck
a skillsaw
a sawzall
a nailgun.....

Re: Priceing Question

For pricing, just call your competitors and find out the going rate, then charge a little bit less. The rate you charge will be low so you won't be able to afford guys, so that eliminates a major headache. As far as tools, buy them all at Home Depot and when the job is done, return them and get your money back.

Don't worry about insurance, insurance is for guys who plan on screwing up, if you do good work you don't need insurance.

You don't need a truck, you can have materials delivered to the job and schedule the subs so you can borrow their ladders and tools.

The fact that you came to this forum and asked these questions tells me that you have put more effort into thinking about your career than the average contractor, I wish you the best!

Re: Priceing Question

If you don't think you're making enough you need to put in more hours. 40 hours a week is for employees. Now that you're in business you should be working 60 hours/week minimum.

Re: Priceing Question

This is easy. 1. Hire like 10 or more ilegals. 2. Pay them $10 per hour. 3. Bill out at $25. 4. You will make $150+ per hour x 60 hr's per week = $468,000 Gross per year.
5. All the other stuff just gets in the way

Re: Priceing Question

Make up a number that sounds a little high to you, then if the customer gets a shocked look, say, "But we have a special sale going on this month," and give them a lower price.

Re: Priceing Question

Don't listen to these guys....the secret to a successful contracting business, with little or no capitol, is to just do enough to get a deposit and then move onto the next customer/sucker. No one actually does work anymore...

Re: Priceing Question

Your guys should be paying YOU for the privilege of working for you....in the meantime, let them supply the tools and trucks and add the rental fee to the rate you will be charging them.

People think they are entitled to a job and a paycheck. I'm here to tell you that is not proper thinking.People are entitled to work their asses off with little to show for their work.

Re: Priceing Question

I agree with all of the above but would like to add one thing. Marry a rich woman first in case our advice doesn't pan out.

Re: Priceing Question

Its all in the books. hahahah 7.25 man hours for the roof on a 60 degree day in ohio considering he is not hung over from Monday night football binge. Add 4.5 hours if he is. Triple that number if its below 40, he hung over and your in Jersey. Figuire 14.658 man hours for cabinetry if the units are on site, in the work area, and using the same crew starting Thursday ending Friday unless. You may dangle a carrot to the same hung over worker by promising early friday dismissal upon completetion. He may be in a hurry to meet monday night girl for happy hour Friday.
