Plumbing Licenses

I am interested in becoming a plumbing journeyman and interested in the requirments.

Also, I am interested in becoming a plumbing contractor and the requirements. (from my research it seems that you need 4 years in the trade but I found that if you have a college degree it cuts it in half.)

Please help me out and correct me if I am wrong.

It will vary from State to State..and possibly at the county level...maybe even at the city level.

Plumbing licenses are issued by the state's health dept., you could start there. In Illinois you have to be an apprentice for four years under a licensed journeyman before you are eligible to take the license test for a state license, it is the same in the city of Chicago, which can issue it's own licenses, but the test is much harder.

Maybe in your state.

In my neck of the woods, plumbing licenses are issued by a girl named Jen.

What state??

For CA: http://www.cslb.ca.gov/applicants/blueprint.asp

Ya gotta long way to go to get to your Journeyman...than your schooling will help, it's 1 yr for a 2 year assc. degree in a particular field, it's 2 yrs off for a 4 year bachelors degree however I'm not sure if the degree you have has to be related to your trade (plumbing).

In most states you need a liscense just to work in the plumbing trade, it has nothing to do with a contractors license.

Right, in my state you need an apprentice license to start, but that link he posted has every states requirements for each license from what I could see.

Can't speak for his state, but mine requires a license just to be an apprentice.

It may have taken you years to get to where you are, but there is a lot you are not allowed to do while having your GC.....and doing a plumbers job.

so general contractor is where it is at huh?

I understand that you need 4 years of experience here in florida to get a license but what confusing me is what they mean by "construction related degree"... I don't get that part where they say college degree replaces 2 years.

I am about 6 months from having my A.A. in engineering. I wonder if that qualifies.

Talking James in L. A.I guess the S. F. and Marin CO. inspectors Don't know this!

They keep signing off My work! You should know a Ca. Gen B license allowes Me to pull all permits, as long as there are at least 3 different trades being done on that project . One job we did was a complete rebuild in S.F. It included new 2nd. floor ,new service and re-wire, All new cast iron and copper. New Vessman boiler with rediant heat. New gas lines. I pulled all the permits, did all the work with My Son and ,carpenters working for Me ,under My G. C. license. I've been doing this in Ca. since 1984. Now what's a lit I didn't do James?

That was a little misleading and I just ASSumed that your doing plumbing was by itself with nothing else. Yes, 3 trade and ur good to go.

Ever heard of AGC Construction out of San Mateo?

So a general contractor in California can't pull a permit for a job that only requires one trade? So a general contractor would not be able to re-roof somebodys house because it only requires roofing? A general contractor would not be able to tile somebody's floor because it only requires flooring?

Does it have to be at least three trades per job, or at least three fields of work that you want to work in with your business?

Here is the rules for the Florida contractors

http://www.leg.state.fl.us/statutes/...20111#0489.111

But the 4 years are very specific on what you must have done and you still have to have a person holding the same or higher licence sign off for you that you worked under his supervision for the time. Even the a GC can't do plumbing, to my understanding, without a plumbing licence too. Plus the paper work, credit check and $20,000 in the bank is a pain. Check this site for more ?'s the test is hard do take a class on it somewhere.

http://www.myflorida.com/dbpr/index.html
Good luck
