Permit Cost/ How Much?

I usually pay $35.00 to $50.00 in MA for a permit. Today I went to RI to get a permit for the first time. MA, 7k job cost $35, in RI 6k job cost $158.00. MA they come and inspect your work and materials, RI no inspection! I really don't mind paying if it is to protect the consumer, but $158.00 for a piece of paper!

How much do permits cost in your area for non-structural work, doors and windows?

Re: Permit Cost/ How Much?

Here they start out at $100 along with a $75 health inspection permit (make sure your not building on the septic system or drain field). Some towns also require a surety bond (figure another $100). End of the job generally requires an 'as built' survey if you've increased lot coverage in any way....another $350. No permit is needed for replacing doors, windows, siding, roofing.

Re: Permit Cost/ How Much?

I just pulled a permit for 13K of remodeling work inside the city limits and the permit was $740.00. A few weeks ago I pulled a permit for work in an unincorporated area of the county for $7500 of remodeling and the permit was $130.00

That 740 caught me by surprise since I have never dealt with their building dept, it shocked the crap out of the homeowner too when I gave him the bill for it. He actually stuttered.

In the main town that I work in most, the electrical permits are free. You just have to be licensed to pull one and have a current licensing bond.

Maybe MA doesn't charge enough. I will keep my mouth shut.

Re: Permit Cost/ How Much?

I always figure permit fees as an allowance number, and use my best guess. Here in Santa Cruz, between the city and the county, you just never know what they'll come up with. God forbid you should add a window overlooking the ocean, or an extra sink on a sewer line. Not only might your fees enter never-never land, but you could wait a couple of extra weeks to get started.

I'm always cautious of taking ownership over those types of things I can't control.

Of course, I realize that's a BS statement. This is construction. Everythings out of control.

Some towns charge a percentage of the work being done.
