Patio Slider ?'s

I'm having a 600Sq Ft deck built in the following weeks. It will be built off of my 3 season room and dining/kitchen room. I want a 5 ft slider installed in my 3 season porch to the deck and a 6 foot slider installed from my dining room to the deck. The question is, which slider do I go with??? I have heard many different options and I'm still up in the air as what to buy? Do I go to Home Depot or Lowes and buy what they carry or Do I go to a contractor supply (ABC, C+S...) Do I buy Vinyl or Aluminum or Wood?
Give me your feedback guys and gals. I'm looking to spend about 1k for each slider. Am I in the ballpark or way out of it?

Bryce

Re: Patio Slider ?'s

$1000 each installed or material only?
Do you want ei-cheapo's or something that will work well?
Do you require a long warranty and a good product or just one?
DO you want real wood on the inside or wood grain?
Do you want double or triple glass? Do you know the difference?
I could go on and on..........give some details.

Re: Patio Slider ?'s

Depending on what part of the country you are in you should be able to get Pella or Andersen for close to your price. Some parts of the country stock the 5' doors and some parts require a special order which increases the price.

Some vinyl doors have better warranties and have more energy efficient glass. The difference between double and triple pane glass is night and day. The triple pane doors will reduce your heat gain during the summer, reduce sound year round and keep the cold out better during the winter. You will pay for the triple pane up front but it will pay you back in the long run.

Re: Patio Slider ?'s

Am I buying an inferior product when I buy Pella and Anderson from the big box stores(lowes and Home Depot)? I've heard that when you buy from them, its a cheaper product. Am I wrong? Should I buy a slider from a door store? I'll be making my purchase this weekend and would like to hear from the experts.

Re: Patio Slider ?'s

On the sliders i would definately pay a bit extra and go with the Andersons.

Lowes stocks the cheap pella windows and depot stocks cheap Millguards i believe.

Box stores dont stock Anderson sliders and they come in 12 pieces but the price should be fair.

Overall its a no brainer if you want quality to go Anderson.

Just make sure the idiots at the box store give you all the hardware etc that comes with your purchase before you leave.

I would go with Andersen Frenchwood Gliders. Nice doors, fair price, good quality. The Pella in Lowes is the "Pro" series which is not the same as you get in the Pella Store.
Downfall of Pella is with the screen on the inside bugs collect on it and end up in your house. May not be that big of an issue if you are going from house to three season porch.

In my own personal opinion, Andersen kits are a PAIN...just so you know, I haven't used them very often so maybe you have a good technique

We deal with Pella unless the HO specs Andersen. I live in a more rural area so only Pella has a store here. Their outside sales rep bends over backwards for us and they have a full time service technician that will show at a seemingly moments notice.

Our Andersen rep is outside sales for our local lumber yard.

Re: Patio Slider ?'s

Yes the Anderson kits are a pain the first few times but they go together pretty good once you get a few in your system.

The rollers and hardware is the key on a slider imo and thats where they stand above the rest.

My mother in Minnesota needed her slider and 2 windows replaced in her condo and i felt bad because im 600 miles away in Colo and couldnt realistically do it. I recommended paying the extra bucks for the Anderson vs. the snake oil vynal crap and shes been very happy since.

I have no affiliation with Anderson but i believe its a great product if installed correctly.

And yes again. They are a pain in the ass the first time you start opening 15 boxes.

lol.

The Andersen kits that we use in the area of the country have 5 boxes.

1- Frame, takes about 5 minutes to put it together.
2-Stationary panel, takes a minute to cut the box open.
3-Operating panel, takes a minute to cut the box open.
4-Handle set, once again a minute to open.
5-Screen " "

The kits are nice because you only need one person to install them. Not sure what your other 10 boxes contain, the last couple hundred that I've done only had 5 boxes and once in a while people did not want a screen so I only had 4 boxes.

BTW, stay away from their POS oak thresholds with the screw holes all over the face they look like garbage.

Re: Patio Slider ?'s

Never used a factory overpriced threshhold but encouraged the customer to ask for a refund.

Ive literally had 8 boxes of hardware and it was probably custom ordered but boxes of crap nonetheless.

Bottom line is people should factor this crap into their bid.
