Parking Pole Removal

I dunno where the hell to put this thread. See pic below. My client wants to have that pole removed now that I have removed her tanked heater. I believe it's just a steel pole with concrete. What is it going to take to make it flush with the floor, with your average plumbers tools?
Thx

Re: Parking Pole Removal

A 4-1/2" grinder with a cutting wheel oughtta do the trick.

Not knocking your work but, whats up with the gas line, why did you not square it up. A longer piece of channel would have done the trick.

Re: Parking Pole Removal

I fudged it up....After it was together I stood back and gave a rather audiable What the Fu*k. I was time crunched and I am by no means done on this house. Hard water is killing the fixtures.

Re: Parking Pole Removal

So just a metal cut off wheel, all the way around, then break it over?

I thought so, now you have to give us an updated picture when fixed, so we know you fixed it. Don't leave us looking at that screw up.

well, actually I changed the layout last minute. Notice the 90 off the gas valve. Usually I bring the gas line in from the bottom, but I was pre planning for the copper work and I wanted the gas line out of my way. Well dumb ass that I am forgot about the handle for the gas valve.....sigh....I had to get gas back on and hot water going so I left it. I am adding a softener next week so I will fix it later. So for now it's my poor mans version of a CSST drip tee

Yep.

Use a masonry wheel on the concrete if it doesn't break flush with the floor.

Re: Parking Pole Removal

Maybe a longer nipple between the shutoff and the 90 will square it up.

Re: Parking Pole Removal

I would do like others said and use a angle grinder and just grind the pipe it off flush with the floor.

Ive never seen a pole like that in a garage, looks stupid.

The poles are common and they're good sense. It keeps your car from running into that water heater and your house.....it happens.

Here in michigan most water heaters go in the basement.

They should pain the pole black so you can see it instead of painting it white like the wall.

I saw that, too. We had to put in a tank for a circ pump...I don't have the specs 'cause I didn't do it.

I still prefer black pipe----looks way cleaner.

Re: Parking Pole Removal

Bummer that it's part of the floor - I've seen many that have a bolt-down flange top-mounted on the finished concrete instead. You just unscrew the concrete screws (or bust 'em off) and the metal pipe and flange are free. Is it possible that the white piece is a cover of some sort over that kind of arrangement?

Seems like it would have been a PITA to pour the concrete and get it smooth with a big pipe in the middle of the floor...

Re: Parking Pole Removal

Parking Pole Removal:

Standard Procedure - Get a nice solid chain. Attach it around the base of the parking pole, and the other end to the bumper of your work vehicle (nice new truck recommended).

Allow engine to warm up, place truck in parking gear. Rev engine to 4K RPM, drop gear into drive.

Please post pictures....

Re: Parking Pole Removal

It's called a bollard and is commonly used to provide protection for structures that are suceptable to being banged into by vehicles. I would guess that someone hit the platform or the heater at some time in the past.

Easy removal: go to a rental store and rent a concrete curb cutter, or if they don't have that a quick-cut with a steel cutting blade. We've done them many times.

Code requires it, if the heater is in a direct line of a vehicle that a post is required.
