Painting Tile?
Has anyone had any experience painting ceramic tile? There is a company here in Richmond that does it but they are way out of line with pricing.

Re: Painting Tile?
I have a project that has wall tile up 42" and the top tile is black and instead of replacing the tile I thought I could paint it. The tile in tub will be replaced so I'm not worried about that. I'm only wondering about the tile on the wall. The customer is a single guy with grown children moved out. Chances are slim that he will ever scratch it unless he gets into doing some kinky stuff with his girlfriend. Now what do you think??

Re: Painting Tile?
I've not used, seen, or heard of (from a reliable first-hand source), of a tile "paint" that works well
If there is a good way, it wouldn't be cheap or easy I'm sure the price would seem out of line

Re: Painting Tile?
Clean the tiles real good. Scuff up even more. Tack off, and prime with XIM clear solvent primer. Then topcoat with 1-2 coats of 2-part epoxy.
I usually roll/tip the finish, and it levels out nicely. If you can hit it with an hvlp, even better. |

Re: Painting Tile?
Have had to do this a few times. Wash the tiles with tsp first. Two coats of Zinsser shellac based primer (dries very fast and will stick to anything). Then either a good quality oil based paint or I have gone to autobody shops and had them match the colour I want and mix up some spray cans (that stuff is very durable and dries very fast so you can apply multiple coats quickly). My 2 cents...

Re: Painting Tile?
Pro and Worx,
How long will this last? I just removed the peptobismal color tiles. I had considered having them painted. The HO didnt mind spending the money so I replace it. But for future reference, I would like to be able to tell them how well this works. |

Re: Painting Tile?
Osborn, if the prep work is done thoroughly and correctly, it should last a long time. Barring any excessive abuse, the epoxy I use (Pratt & Lambert Pal-Gard) dries hard as nails and should be durable for a long time. I don't recall any call backs from one of these jobs. But remember, prep is ever so important for proper adhesion.
BTW, I also used this product to paint 70 +/- entry door thresholds in a hi-rise condo about 10 years ago. I have been back several times, and they still look new, and that is with people walking on them. |
