Oops, Glad It Wasn't My Fault

was getting ready to do a sheet rock patch in a ceiling last night for a good friend's girlfriend. as i was getting the tools/mud, i asked my helper to get a drop cloth, and my buddy said don't worry about it. she told me where one was, and i already spread it for you. I went in cut out the damaged rock, had it and all the crap that falls from a 100 year old ceiling fall down, made and mudded the patch, spilling my usual amount of mud on the drop cloth.

Girlfriend came down stairs, looked at me and asked why i was using her dining room table cloth! Fortunately my buddy owned up and admitted he thought it was the drop cloth. actually it looked a lot like my drop clothes except it was one color.

i just had to apologize and offer to pay for a new one which she refused.

i think my buddy will be in the dog house for a while on that one.

anybody else have any of these to share?

You could have just offered to let her have your drop cloth for a replacement!

Seriously, if you didn't poke any holes in it it might clean up fine.

Re: Oops, Glad It Wasn't My Fault

I can beat that. My son and another went out to paint a tin roof I had done. Somehow, the Golden Retreivers knocked the 5 gal. bucket of black paint over on the new deck.

Did I mention that the Golden Retrievers were now Black Labs??

Oh, Did I mention the house had pet doors???

Can you believe I actually got paid for that job!!!!!!!

I mentioned it to the Ho recently and still gets mad!

The wife laughs her a$$ off whenever I mention it! THere wasn't a floor, wall, of piece of furniture in the house that didn't have linseed oil black paint on it.

I was doing a deck for a handy HO once (one of my best customers) And he used his patio table for sawhorses and cut right through part of the frame and glass top about 2" into it. When I saw it and mentioned it to him he said "Yea my wife was mad about you doing that to our table" I said "what? I dont remember doing that!" He said "Well I was not going to admit to it, so I blamed it on you" I said "well thanks... I think"

I was doing an estimate for some attic bracing and the customer insisted on coming up.
I kept suggesting he stay down as I would write a detailed estimate.
He insisted on coming up and sure enough put a foot through the ceiling.

His nice wife splurted out " I hope that was him"? He owned up and asked me to bid the sheetrock repair as well?

I was very sympathetic after her comment and upped the charge considerably.

Some things in life are just very enjoyable

Re: Oops, Glad It Wasn't My Fault

Last year, I was building a closet to turn a room that the HO was using as an office, back into a bedroom. This room was carpeted so he had about a 4' X 5' piece of tempered 3/8" glass on the floor to roll his office chair around on. Part of my contract stated that the customer was to have the room completely emptied out, but he had left the glass there. I brought to his attention that he forgot to move the glass and he says...."don't worry about that thing...it's 3/8" thick, and tempered...you couldnt break it if you tried".....I said "I would prefer it be moved anyway, would you like me to move it for you?"...he said no...So i lay down my canvas drops over it and start to frame the closet....about 15 minutes in, I set my ladder on the corner of the glass and BOOM!!! I hit him for an extra for the 2 hours it took me to clean it up.

Re: Oops, Glad It Wasn't My Fault

Was working on a job where the main comercial building was to have a metal roof. So 30 ft lengths of roofing was brought in to cover the 60 foot long building. Since it was an exposed truss ceiling inside they wanted to paint the whoel thing white. The painters were using a special paint that was supposed to be dry by the time it hits the floor.

Problem was that it did not hit the floor is was sucked out where the soffit was supposed to be (not yet installed) and it settled on the roof.

Dark brown roof with millions of white dots on it. NICE

If gets better

The painter decided to paint over it to "fix it"

Problem one wrong paint
Problem two wrong color
Problem three It started to rain on the still wet paint. Marking it peel/bubble
Problem four It was flat not Gloss.

The painters tried to blame it on everyone but themselves.

End result $30,000 insurance for a strip and redo of one very big roof.
