Old Stucco Patch

Apparantley no one around town wants anything to do with patching some stucco where a window used to be.

I searched here but, could not find much useful information.

This is a early 40's house, I am sure I know who built it (dead now) as there seems to be a stucco plauge here in town.

The stucco is thick, and very bumpy and rough (large aggragate).
It seems that it was shot on.

I might have a lead on someone that knows the mix but, I am just trying to find out a little more information here.

I have a picture but, I left my camera at work.

I think some of the ol' boys from Indiana might know what I am talking about. I cant even find a picture on this here internet thing that looks like this house.

Thanks,
Darcy

Are you looking for someone to do it, advice on what to do, or???

Wood lathe, chicken wire, tar paper, exact mix, something else you can use

Normal base coat, scratch coat, finish coat is hard to guess what the texture is, Try using a brush with a dabbing motion or possibly a slinging motion with the brush - both give a course finish

I can't believe they shot it on like gunite back in the 40's

Re: Old Stucco Patch

I would use 30# felt , then galvanized wire lath . We use a pre mixed brown coat . I think its mega mix ? Its course sand with Portland and fiber . For a patch you could use Portland and course sand. Cover the wire and let it dry . The patch gets coated over again to make the wall flush. The texture in the stucco gets filled in with paint , so it looks smooth . The best thing Ive try ed is a pine branch with Portland sand mix very wet . just dip the branch in a pan of splugeeee and slap it on . Then paint it . It really looks good when its done . You could try some california stucco but i wouldn't bother for a patch.

Re: Old Stucco Patch

Is it really pointy on the ends of the stucco kind of like some textured ceilings?

It is rough, like gouge your back rough. I can see some pretty big stones in the top coat.

I have 2 layers of paper up and wire mesh stapled up over that. I got the first 2 coats covered on what is going on, its just the last coat that is getting me.

I really think it was gunned on. There was a guy in town here in the 40's, 50's and 60's that stucco'd everything.

Re: Old Stucco Patch

It is either gunned on or a pull finish where you take a trowl put some mud on it and pull straight back will leave big pointy texture That kind of hangs.

You nailed the look right there. I have to go find my camera and get the pictures of it.

I have been ripping that stuff off of an old farm house and re-doing the orginal wood underneath on another 'filler job'. That crap is freaking heavy!!

Re: Old Stucco Patch

Serious, it has huge stones in it. I guess a picture is worth a thousand words huh?

At least bigger than pea gravel.

Re: Old Stucco Patch

What year was the house built? more then likely it was applied with pump and shot on to the surface, I have been doing more stucco repairs, I started one this week, I had to remove 8 section on this 1926 Turdor it's a high end house. I have some pictures of an exterior I did a few years ago the house was built in 1912 real heavy stucco they used a pump and then shot it on the walls, there really isn't a way to match by hand, If you have large areas that need repairing you could rent the equipment.

Re: Old Stucco Patch

I once saw a stucco house that had what appeared to be 3/8ths aggregate projecting from the surface. It projected at least half the depth of the stone. The house was probably built in the 1920's. I have no idea how they created that finish. It couldn't have been with a trowel because the aggregate projected so far out from the mortar. That may be what the OP is dealing with.

Re: Old Stucco Patch

That is what 90% of the stucco is here. Half the rock exposed. Either useing pea gravel or river rock. You trowel it on like other finishes then. Let it setup a little bit, but not hard still thumb print hard. Then take the garden hose to it and wash the surface of exposing the pea grazel or river rock. If you wait to long you have to use a stiff brush and water.

Cole

I hope nobody reads this that is in my area. There is only a hand full of us that know how to do it and make it look good.
