No End In Sight

Just came off a pretty bad year. Lost an addition that would have carried me into the tail end of next summer, on top of dealing with the usual tire kicking, wasting my time, bs clients. I'm finishing a bath remodel, and after that, nothing in the works. Same story with everyone I speak to. Hows everything where you are? Hope everyone is hangin' in there.

OK so far. Been hearing bad things though. I get 3-4 contractors on my jobs each week looking for work. Others are busy like me.

Hangin' in, but finishing up a 2800 sq ft custom home and absolutely nothing to go to after that. Very worried, Southern Cal economy is rife with foreclosures and BK's and seems like nobody is borrowing to do remodels and additions. I had two, both fell through until mid year 2009 at the earliest, if at all.
Might have to do handyman work or whatever I can get. Laid off three guys, only have one left.
We'll see, but this could be a long winter.

Re: No End In Sight

Last month was my worst month in years, this month I'm busy as heck.I have become a bit of a miser and really hold on to my cash/savings for those lean times.
And ,I actually had a lot of calls but someone is really low-balling out there, they are going to go broke while working 80 hr weeks.I just flat-out will not lower my prices,I am very fair and treat the hos and bos as well as possible. One positive aspect is that 70% of my business last month was from repeat customers,so I'm doing something right ,and it did cover my overhead and then some, thankfully.

Its been a tight year for me also, alot of weather related delays. I am busy thru Jan 09 with time sensitive jobs, and then have a few "when I get to its" should last till spring. I hope things improve for everybody!

Re: No End In Sight

It has not been to bad up here in Calgary for us...I am booked until mid Feb... But with that said. I finished up my last reno (small kitchen and bath) last week and had to take Friday off because I had nothing on the go and then within a 4 hour period on Friday I recieved 3 calls for work that I had quoted out for go aheads. The last while has been quite stressful not knowing what was happening. We are very fortunate in that all of our work this year has been repeat and referral. I hope things pick up for you guys down south... I know alot of guys up here are really struggling as well.

Re: No End In Sight

Well.. as this year is coming to a close, I can look back and say I had a pretty good year. This is only my second year in business and I'm still in business in this economy, so I guess thats pretty good. All my bills are paid up through the 1st of the year, so I'm happy about that. All these old time contractors keep telling me that I'm going to be blown away when then economy bounces back. They tell me stories of billing higher rates, more work then they can handle, and being able to pick and choose projects. That will be great. That is the world that I someday want to live in! I do have jobs set up for Dec and Jan but nothing huge, just enough to pay the bills.

I'm in Southern California, and I can tell you when things were hot, there was plenty of top dollar business. One of my best employees got licensed and moved to S.F. and found it was the same up there.

It will come back around, I'm sure. Hang in, and I'll bet in not too long a time the lucre will return, maybe even better this time around.

When hard times seemingly loom ahead, I always think of the Chinese ideogram for "crisis". Contained within are two characters: Danger and Opportunity.

Well i'm one job lite this year . i lost a nice addition in June and had to fill in with a few siding jobs that i did not make much profit on . but i started a job at the end of august and it just keeps snowballing , we paved the parking lot on Friday . The people will be moving in on the 9th of December and it looks like i will be off till Jan 1st then i'm booked till the middle of may now. I have a ton of leads out i hope i get a few jobs from them . If property values don't go up around here i will be doing lots of bathrooms

Re: No End In Sight

Late summer was booming. I think I may have landed a nice $20k floor job for January but other than some EIFS bids, it looks like a rough December. I do have one EIFS job ready for me but old man winter came early and im waiting for him to turn his back The jobs impossible to tent and the bid was submitted in the Spring & they just now got around to starting......good times.
