Nickle And Diming Me!

I did a bsmt bid awhile back and had the HO tell me that he had 1 tube of caulk,3 2x4x8"s, and 1/2 roll of insulation and he wanted to make sure I take this into consideration when bidding the job. I almost started laughing out loud. On top of that he wanted an exact material breakdown for every nail and board.

People never cease to amaze me. Every time I think I've just meet the cheapest HO alive another one comes and tops him.

Re: Nickle And Diming Me!

I'm not saying that it's the case here, but some people have this thing where they need to think that they are saving a little bit of money somewhere so that they can spend it somewhere else. I knew a quite rich woman like that, she would take a really cheap flight somewhere and then spend thousands and thousands on stuff she didn't need.

It may be that something like that is happening here, if it happened to me I would be ignoring the stuff about the materials he had on hand and looking at the value of the job overall, however if I had a couple of other jobs to choose from then I would be gone

You need to run from this guy. The first thing I thought was your potential HO is a control freak. He wants to hire you to do the work while he plays "general." Plus, cheapskates usually win in most situations when push comes to shove. So it's best to avoid this guy.

Re: Nickle And Diming Me!

I had a call from a guy who wanted to do an addition to his house. So I am looking over his drawings, and he says he already has all the materials...and takes me out to a shed and throws open the door....presto....80 or 100 year old lumber from a house demolition...and none of it cleaned...nail ridden, and I am sure, harder then my ex wife's heart. I simply told his life is too short and good luck on finding someone to build on his home with the recycled materials....

Re: Nickle And Diming Me!

I have a customer that always uses us and never seems to get other bids (you can tell by talking to them).
The one thing that always happens is the haggling. What I started doing is adding,,,say $1000 to the job expecting to come down that much. She would start the process and most times I would only drop $600?? Ends up costing her every time but makes her feel good

In the case you are in. I would shake my head and say sure, then triple everything cause you know what he is going to be! And stay money ahead!!

Re: Nickle And Diming Me!

I figured up a nice high bid without his requested breakdown. When he finally got over the sticker shock, he decided to do it himself. ( yaa good luck to ya). I thought about telling him that the price would have been much higher if he didn't have all three of those 2x4x8"s to offset the cost. .

Last I heard he was having a hard time

I would have looked at him and said.... Well that will save you about $13.

Looks like he is getting exactly what he paid for.
