Nice Paperweights

I figured I'd wait quite awhile before I install the wicked nice Vista 64 bit operating system. Problems have been all over the internet and one day last week I said to heck with it, I'm installing. It's gotta be long enough by now.

Well, apparently not. seems my two canon printers don't have 64 bit drivers and according to "Justin" at Canon Care, I will never have Vista 64 bit drivers. So there they sit. Paperweights. Probably never to be used by me and my family ever again.

Anyone have really good recommendations?

What I need is

laser
scan to file (this was a big mistake on my iC, that it could copy, but not to file, only paper)
and of course vista 64 bit supported.
fax would be nice throw in

I like the Canon, but this can't be right. Someone out there must have drivers to make these work.

Re: Nice Paperweights

i have a brother 7820N, its a network based laser all-in-one, with color scanner. I researched several manufactures and models, and chose this one due to a combination of cost, cost of consumables (toner, drum), speed, and features.

I intentionally bought a refurb unit from staples.com b/c it had been reworked to prevent jams & other issues. After a rebate it only cost $150 compared to the $300 of a new unit.

I'm using the Brother Mfc-8440 and am really happy with it. It has 14" flatbed scan, fax, copier and laser printer; And I'm currently using it on Windows Vista without any problems. The software that came with it didnt support vista but there is a new driver available on brother's website.

Dam...last PC I made a point of getting a 64 processor for the new windows version. (When it was longhorn)
After hearing the COUNTLESS software and hardware incompatabilties, I think I'll be sticking with XP for a loonnng time.

Framerman: IMHO the answer to your Vista problems is one you wont like. XP PRO. Vista is just NOT ready for Prime Time

And it's not just Vista. Get XP64 and you will have the same problems. Many manufacturers (like Canon) are not writing 64 bit drivers for hardware that's out of production. Some are not writing 64 bit drivers for hardware that is still in production. You're just sol.

I know, it's go back to the 32 bit OS and wait. Either way, I'm losing. Same thing happened when xp came out if I remember correctly. Man, I love the look and feel of the Vista though. Already got one blue screen of death and I'm waiting for #2. If it happens again, I'm going back to xp 32

Re: Nice Paperweights

another disadvantage of vista is that it is a huge memory hog, all those bells and whistles eat up memory. It requires 1gb to run, and 2gb to be functional. I bought a new laptop with 2gb and reformatted it to xp pro after a week. This was in feb. and I have no desire to load vista at the is point.

I did look into doing a dual boot, and have my HD configured to do so, but then decided it would just be a waste of resources and time. Microsoft should have all the bugs worked out when they release their next new operating system.
