News For Contractors In Pennsylvania
Some people in Harrisburg have started a bill for a Home Improvement Contractor License state wide.
Just thought that all might want to know and respond how you see fit. If it does get to the Governor signing my hope is that it may be acceptable to your way of doing business. Personally there are a few word in there that leave me a little bothered. You can DL the current proposed wordage in the Bill on the link below.I now open the thread for discussion. http://www.legis.state.pa.us/CFDOCS/...r=0507&pn=1643 Happy reading. Les

Hi PP, First thing is that the great state of Pa never seems to get their act together. About 4 months ago there was another bill for a electrical contractor license in the state that specifically stated that a license was required for all voltages above 10 volts. Have not heard the latest on that one. Now this one specifically states that security system installers are required to have this license. Also if passed I am going to have to get me contracts re-done to have the proper capital letter font size for certain parts when I just had received a new supply a few months ago. If your in Pa. and after you read it let me know your thoughts. Have a good holiday. Les

I would love to see a bill of this sort....IF they could and would enforce it. Here in the rural community everyone with a hammer is a carpenter. They show up with a step ladder tied n to their Ford Focus for a job, and I'm supposed to compete with this? This time of yeaqr it doesn't bother me as I lokk, shake my head and say the HO gets what they deserve. During the winter pickings are slim and I still have to pay my insurance, liscence fees for individual boros and basic cost of maintaining business. A lot of the boros around here are just starting to liscence contractors, but I still end up paying throught the nose. $60 for this one, $75 for this one and $100 for this one and on and on. Most of the time they really don't enforce anything anyways, just a source of revenue for them. You still see the step ladder on cars or rotted out pick ups sorry for the vent |

Re: News For Contractors In Pennsylvania
I'm just below you guys in Maryland, we have a Home Improvement license, it's a joke. It's not really enforced, so it just becomes another tax on the guys who want to operate legally. It does provide a guarantee fund for homeowners who are ripped off, so for HO's it's great, assuming they know anything about it. Maybe if you guys scream loud enough now, they'll pass something that will be enforced. Good luck!

Re: News For Contractors In Pennsylvania
I started in business doing kitchen exhaust cleaning. Cleanings are mandated by local AHJ's and the cleanings need to be done adhering to strict guidelines with a ton of liability insurance. Did any of that make a difference? Hell no. Still went into Moo Soo Sung's place that hasn't been cleaned for nine years with rancid grease dripping from the hood system and he tells me he will get some relative to clean it. If they didn't enforce these guys cleaning eating establishments, they won't enforce contractor licensing. It'll just be something to add to my business cards and truck lettering (more expense)
