i was at my window suppliers store today shooting the proverbial **** . we exchanged war stories about customers trying to get out of paying the final check or trying to scalp us. he said an indian customer(shocker) actually tried to short him 500 bucks on the final payment. why? because they finsished in 3 days instead of 5 days. the guy said he should'nt pay 5 days labor only 3.hthe price was'nt based on daily labor fee's. my friend then asked if he took 7 days would he have been paid more money for the 2 extra days! he said the indian paid him but it was a hassle. no offense but indians are bad to deal with,muslims as well. am i a racist? no. they just think its ok to barter. they do it at the start before the contract then at the end during final payment.

I am in no way defending any customer that tries to get out of paying the price they agreed to in a contract but it may be helpful to understand that bartering is a part of east indian culture.

Again, I'm not defending his customer's actions or attempt to get a "reduction" nor did I say that anyone had to "go along with it". I completely agree that if you move to another country that you should adopt their customs, etc.

I was just saying that a little understanding can be beneficial.

Most of them that live here are also Americans just like you and your friends. While I have yet to claim one as my client but I love to talk to them on the phone! I have a policy about not dropping my price and telling people that I will act really upset if they ask for discounts. For some reason they think that I am a comic and for some reason I don't put that title on my business cards.

Yeah, me too. especially when I'm trying to handle a tech support internet problem or deal with some issue on a credit card and I can barely understand them.

Most of my friends are illegal Mexicans, I live in Los Angeles. But I guess here, at this point, that qualifies as an American.

Bodger, I deal with a bunch of them when I need work done on my sites, when it comes to tech stuff they generally kick butt compared to lazy white people. If you think Mexican's are affordable it will blow your mind what people in India will work for. Oddly enough I do not bargain with them when they state a price and most of them reward me with world class work for $1.00-$3.00 an hour.

thats my point. if they agree to a contract price of 5k and then at the end they owe you 1k but say they are only paying 500. wtf! you're supposed to be understanding and chalk it up as their culture. i'm italian,do i have someone beat with a baseball bat because they did'nt pay me on time? in muslim countries its ok to beat or kill your wife,are we supposed to be understanding about that as well....

right and wrong is universal and shluld have no cultural barriers;its inherent. agree to a price,pay the price. a girl is caught not wearing a veil in public,she is whipped until she passes out? thats acceptable because its their culture?
