Question

Need Help With College Project!

hey everyone! my name is brian and im in my first year for my bachelors in construction management. im fairly new to the field, but looking forward to learning and progressing! glad this project has brought me here to the forum! def. some knowledge around here for sure!

ive got an assigment for my MEP class that deals basically with CSI divisions 15 and 16. i need to select a construction project and:

1.) name the project
2.) name the architect/engineer
3.) list the components of divisions 15 & 16
4.) identify and list the work packages

problem is i need a project plan! was wondering if anyone could share with me a project they have done (small building) and help with the info i need. a copy of the plans would be perfect so i could decipher all the info myself!

any help would be greatly appreciated! only have a week to complete the paper!!

thanks again! and def. looking forward to being apart of the forum!

lol! i dont want anyone to do the work for me, i just dont have access to project plans. the instructor said we can use a plan from a company we work for, if we work for one... which i dont. otherwise he said to research a project on the internet or library.

i figured i would throw a post up here to see if anyone can help me with some project plans. the idea for the project is to get us to look through the plans and be able to identify the info we need. i put up what i needed to do for the project NOT so you can answer them, but to let you know what part of the plans i would need so i could identify the info myself

so.... have anything?? lol?

Maybe if you talked a little plainer, without all the abbreviations, we could help. Remember, there are no smart people in construction. If we were, we would have gotten out of it a long time ago.

no smart people in construction??? whew... then i guess ill make it just fine!!

as for the abbreviations...

MEP = mechanic electrical plumbing (thanks rusty)
CSI = construction specification institute
division 15 = mechanical
division 16 = elctrical

basically i just need to be able to look through a project plan and list some the mechanical and electrical stuff along with work packages (scheduled tasks with time frames)

hope that helps!

oh ive googled, and studied the books, and i pretty much understand the divisions, and the breakdown of whats in each, but i still need an actual project plan because i still need other info such as the project architect/designer, and also the work packages.

i can easily just make up what mechanical and electrical elements are in a project plan, but i would actually like to see a plan so i can get a feel for looking at them, and finding the info out myself.

know what im saying?!

... love the yoda by the way!! lol

I wish I could help you, but, I just had a chicken parmesean from hardees and used up all the blank planning paper and had to use my current plan sheet to clean off my bib overalls before my meeting with the HO at 4pm. Good thing I looked it over real good before I messed it all up.

Re: Need Help With College Project!

wish I could help you. i have taken some of those classes before and forgotten everything they taught me. in the market i am in, the detailed time studies, planning, and the like are kinda by the seat of you pants. the most paperwork you will see around here beside the permit is the checks that the ho hands out. rarely even a contract.

Re: Need Help With College Project!

Have you tried any architect/design firms yet? When I was in University (holy crap - 20 years ago) we were given many assignments that we would have to go out and interview businessmen/women or hit them up for some other kind of info (their business plans, etc..). I'm sure if you contacted an architect and told him who you were and what you needed, they would be pretty receptive to giving you a copy of plans for an already completed project. What harm could it do them? Project is done and I bet they'd be happy to help a student out!!

If you think it's rough now, wait until you hit the real world of construction. Management is being able to figure stuff out. G/L with your project

Re: Need Help With College Project!

(I thought I posted this before, but I must have goofed somehow. Here goes again...)

I have a bunch of packages and project plans from clients over the years. But in each contract, there's a lot of language about confidentiality and proprietary info. Not many clients in my market will open the curtain to the anyone off the street - even students - on what they do and what they're building.

I think your best bet is to look online at government websites for project pages. Do a search for "gov", "projects", "drawings", "pdf", "project plan", that sort of thing. You should be able to find something. And if you're going to college, I'd imagine your own college will let you go down to the facilities department and talk to them. They probably have some stuff going on right now that you could look at. Or your town. Go down to the building department and talk to them.

Good luck.

so the assignment is to find a set of plans and highlight the name of the engineer?

glad to see that they're not wasting time on such mindless topics as efficiency, production and profitablity.

Here's what you might try though. You might be able to go to the local B/D department in your locality and pick a random property that has had a permit issued to it. The municipality should have a stamped set of plans.

Just tell em you're working for XYZ builder or something. I dunno - you figure that part out. Ya gotta be kinda crafty sometimes. Either way, get a hold of the plans (this is all public information anyways - so you shouldn't even have to make any excuses).

Simply make a copy of the plans, and be on your way.

not really complaining things are rough at all, and i have no problems figuring things out. i like to use resources (hint: forums) to ask people who have a lot of knowledge about a particular subject. now you would think if i googled and came up with an overwhelming amount of info, i wouldnt be here asking for help now would i? ive found a bunch of places where i can purchase plans, but ill pass on that.

def. makes sense about the confidentiality part. i will check into the gov. sites and see what i can come up with, then check with the building department if all else fails. thanks a lot for the advice

appreciate everyone whos given any input so far
