Need A Fresh Ideal On Hiring

my company needs growth this yr. i'm running 3 carpenters , a plumber, and a painter, all full time w/ benifits. with another lead man we could add another 300.000.00 $ of business. its not easy as he needs to be crosstrained and able to run a variety of projects. kitchen, bath, addns, window/door replacment, and specialty projects. i've spent close to 2000.00 in newsprint, leaned on my trim, lumber salesmen etc, but i need a fresh way to network this job. would appreaciate any thoughts!

I always felt if you found somebody that competent they would work for themselves??

If you add more work will you need more painters, plumbers etc? Can you find those folks?

Bringing in the dollars and earning money off the dollars are two different things. I believe remodeling is a difficult business to expand due to the thousands of little problems that arise.
I think in a specialty business such as roofing, decking, gutters, painting it is easier to expand and keep it under control.
I went through the growth thing and we topped at over 2 million one year. My C.P. A. laughed when she saw what I eneded up with...I cried.
I cut the crew and office staff big time and my slice of the pie has been better in the 7 or so years since. I no longer take jobs to keep some stealing lazy assed bastard on the payroll!!

Not saying I was the best business manager but I worked many hours fixing my guys screw ups....Settling on dollar amounts with customers to make payroll....For me...they can have it.

Sorry if it sounds negative but that is my view on it...If you go,,, then give it hell!!!

But I have to ask.....Why do midwest folks say IDEAL instead of idea??

Re: Need A Fresh Ideal On Hiring

well i can understand where your at also but years ago i comitted to my own crews and specialty items can sub. we ran a million three last yr and i would admit to a couple of under achieving jobs i still want the control. your right about them running their own show but a skilled leadman won,t necessarily make a good business man. here they work 40 hrs, no weekends, taxes withheld, half their health ins paid, paid holidays, wk vacation, and i'll add 3% in a pre tax savings plan. we both know that more than what they,re doing for themselves. ( not all but alot of them ) i know a skilled man can make more working for me, and the family can count on steady income.

I understand the skilled lead man. I live 120 miles out of Houston in the country on the lake.
I go to Houston one day a week and do my estimates. The rest is done by e-mail and sending pictures and time on the phone.
My lead man has been with me 10 years and he gets the bennies you mentioned. If he left I would likely shutdown and build some houses up here but to date he seems happy? Of course he makes more than me but my hidden benefits are better

If you can structure it and keep them happy, make money and not have too much stress then your doing well

My sister in-law uses ideal all the time (Illinois) and we hassle the hell out of her. She keeps coming to visit so she must like it!!

Down here, idear is heard a lot. Just regional stuff.

Back on topic, the Patriots are winning! Wrong topic! I'm in hurricane alley and have given up on finding any decent help. I did manage to aquire a new electrician who is better than the last. Whew! Nobody wants to WORK anymore, they all want jobs with terminals.
