Moving To Las Vegas Good Or Bad?

I am looking at moving to Las Vegas and was wondering if anyone can give me some insight as to what the construction business is like there. I know it is a fast growing city with a lot of construction going on but is it all $10 an hour work? Does anyone have any good Vegas input besides the " What happens in Vegas stays in Vegas" kind of stuff. Thank you in advance

I get calls and e-mails from head hunters in Vegas all the time to run high rise work, depending on your trade and ability, there is money to be made there, and they pay competitive wage to qualified trades, but expect to work 50 to 60 hours a week.

There's got to be an end to Vegas' aggressive growth rate at some point, but when, who knows? I'd try it, if I was young and single.

Vegas has got to run out of water soon.

I was there 29 years ago for my 21st and lost 1200.00. I asked Guido for my money back as I was only playing for fun and he said NO.

Screw 'em....never went back.

It is not ten dollar an hour jobs, Vegas is a union city. They are constantly building 24 hours a day 7 days a week. You get paid well but expect to work extra. They want you to work 7 days a week for 12 hour shifts. They pay overtime but it can burn you out.

Re: Moving To Las Vegas Good Or Bad?

I can't imagine living in Vegas. I go there, was just there in May this year for fun, but I could never in a million years imagine living there. Everything revolves around the strip, you plan you driving around the strip traffic, you have to deal with millions of tourists all the time, everybody works for the casinos, it's a plastic fake life all revolving around the strip, gambling and fleecing the tourists.

Nice place to visit, but never in a million years would I live there and think of having anything like a normal life or raise kids in that environment. It would be no different then living in Orlando where Disney owns everyones souls.

If you're moving from Upstate NY though you'll be in hog heaven for about 18 months untill you're divorced, broke and cursing the day you moved there.

Jeeesh Mike,
No sense of adventure.

I used to follow the work around the country in my younger days, and wouldn't trade it in for any sedentary life style.
I'd say if your young and single, give it a try.Nothing opens your eyes up more to the world than a new location and the challenge to see what your made of.
You have some good points to take into consideration, but maybe the OP could cope with the negatives.

Any ways good luck vconstruction,at least your doing your research.

I know, I sound like more of the "old fart" don't I?

It's all about quality of life for me at this point.

I know that's what the tourists think,
but I've had family out there for well over fifty years,
and believe it or not there are normal people living normal lives!
(Assuming there's anything normal about living in a brick kiln)
When I was a kid it was just one very strange small town.
Most of the family friends were Mormons
(about half the population in the 50's)
along with a few guys like Benny Binion.
Grandma ran a boarding house mostly construction guys.
Back then they went to work @ 4AM got off at noon
and 35 year old guys looked like leather mummies.

(Disclaimer:
There are those who might say that not many in my family
qualify for "normal" anyway.)

Re: Moving To Las Vegas Good Or Bad?

I have been thinking about this myself. Unless you want ten bucks a hour I would contact the carps local 1977. I only want to stay for 3-4 months and work on that new mega casino complex where the ole' frontier used to be. this whitey can't handle heat over 95.
