Mortise Bed Shower Tile Floor Installation

I have a job right now that involves going in and installing a mortar bed shower tile floor. Does anybody have any input or good websites with directions on how to install a floor like this properly? I have been taught to install one one way, which is to of course have a subfloor and proper framing around the shower enclosure, and install a base pan with a rubber liner in it then to float the morter to build up the flooring at a concaved angle to the floor drain in the shower for it to drain properly. Also the drain in the shower should have some small gravel lined around the plumbing drain which should have a weep hole in case of back which should allow the water to drain back into the pipe instead of leaking. Of course then there is the tile and grout afterwards. If anyone knows of a website with illustrations for this or has input as to how to install one properly please post it here.

Re: Mortise Bed Shower Tile Floor Installation

I am guessing you mean "mortar bed" shower or "dry pack" shower base. They are not difficult, but they have to be done right or there will be problems down the road. There are several new products that make the job better and easier available now such as Kerdi and Nobleseal.

The best website is John Bridge, he is one of the trades foremost experts. The link is: http://johnbridge.com/vbulletin/index.php

It will take a little searching and reading, but you will find everything you need to know right there.

Good Luck!

Thanks firemike. Your right the website that you sent me is very helpful. I did mean mortar when I wrote the message and realized I was wrong about calling it mortise which is a carpentry term.... sorry. Thanks for the input and help
