Monolithic Dome Homes
Any one built or worked on one, know anyone that lives in one. Maybe know a rough sf price to have one built.
The wife and I have been looking at relocating/building so have been going over what type style to build. They look good if one may go the Fla way, with all the big wind they get. Last edited by Downeast; 07-04-2006 at 04:57 PM. |

Re: Monolithic Dome Homes
DE I gotta tell you, when I worked for a structural consulting engineer those things were the biggest joke
Admittedly, they look good on paper, but there wasn't one in our area that wasn't a client....in the bad way, they were all cracked

Re: Monolithic Dome Homes
I think the concept is great, reality though is not very practical for living area, and they have heat and cooling problems associated with the height across 2 or 3 living areas.
I love the idea of geometry in form and function like the geodisic homes, but I think I will skip it on the practical side. There are 3 within 8 miles of me and no more were built (these were built late 70's). I understand you cannot get a decent appraisal for lending purposes and re-sale value or market may be tough. A great home to build would be the ICF construction..you may not have the home, but you have the energy efficency that will be critical in coming years.

Looked up ICF construction as I was not familiar with it. Looking at a site,I think I saw a TOH type show on them. They have the insulated panels wraped in crete, with pipes to run the wires and such through. Have you participated in this type of construction? Know of someone that has one? Thanks. |

Re: Monolithic Dome Homes
We were going to do a custom ICF home..4800 total feet, but it fell through since the customer just couldn't get the idea of how much a home like that would cost. I have been on 3 pours with other contractors, and 2 technical seminars...and I am convinced...but I may not get to do one to I build mine...and it will be ICF, with Insul deck roof panels...I live in the middle of tornado alley.
By the way, the panels are not wrapped in concrete...they are styrofoam blocks filled with concrete...and they stack together like legos....neat. Google rewardwall.com or insulatedconcretehomes.com and see what you find.

Re: Monolithic Dome Homes
I once looked at buying one (late 70's) and while the energy factor is good, the space usage blows.
The only way that I would look at this would be the same as a yacht. Everything built-in. Very expensive. Done correctly, you can live in significanty fewer CUBIC ft. with the smallest exterior exposure. A sphere has the most volume/lowest surface area.
