MIS/IT In Construction
Hello all!
I have recently started a job at a construction company that does general contracting and engineering as an IT manager. I am still learning the ropes of this business and wanted to ask 2 questions: 1. What is the business process that you go through to get a job? I'd like to get the prospective of others to understand the process from lead generation to biddinging to completion. 2. What are some of the challenges that you see that you would want someone in IT to resolve or what are the main complaints you have with your IT department? Any help you can give me with either or both of these questions would be greatly appreciated. Thanks again! |

Re: MIS/IT In Construction
I switched carreers and joined the family company after a 10 year stint in IT. Not sure if this qualifies me but here's my input anyway.
Our business process and yours will be different so I don't think it's important to comment on how we're doing it but rather ... I would start by looking at how your company is currently using IT and then change/suggest some alternatives based on your investigation. Are they using a database to track their customers? It's all about the bottom line for non-IT people, so just because you think the latest and greatest client/server solution is in their best interest, if you can't prove it will save the company money it'll be a hard sell. My biggest challenge has been my father-in-law who's done things the old fashion way for the last 25 years. One of the biggest time savers he appreaciates is being able to transfer money from one account to another online without driving across town with a check in hand. Who can argue with someone who's had a successful business without IT right? Well, we've managed to attract a younger buyer based on our ability to communicate via email and our new website generates lots of local traffic too. It's a competitive advantage when we submit electronic drawing v.s. hand drafted. We've even had people tell us our presentation was impressive and they felt more comfortable choosing us. I'd be interested to hear how your company is using IT currently and any changes you're thinking about doing. What is your business/education background? Hope this helps ...Good luck. |
