That's the difference. This is my deal, I'm going to make it happen. I stated in the OP not to post in this thread unless you were willing to be held accountable for a ramp getting built. Shall I look forward to including you in the list of builders for next years' ramps?

Mac

I will shout it from th Roof Tops when it comes to fruition!!!!

Please make it happen Mac!!!!!!

Re: Mac's 2009 Ramp Challenge

Count me in MAC. I talked to an old friend of mine last week and come to find out he's trying to branch out on his own. We talked about what a good learning it would be for him. I built 2 commercial ramps last year...will try to dig up the specs I used for them. 1 of them was for the head building inspector for 2 counties in Pa...good resource!!

Excellent, Cole, good to hear!

I've been slow in getting info to Seth - I got busy w/ some design work and I'm waiting for some additional info from the HBA office - tips n' tricks they got from the original RAT guys in WA state.

Not to worry, Malco, this project isn't going to die! That's one of the reasons I gave it a year to get done - everyone's moving at different schedules.

I am behind you all the way to the nail downs and will poke and prod you just when I think it may be necessary. Although I do not, thus far, see that necessity becoming a situation of happening.

You see....My Brother was a Special Needs Child from Birth that became a Para in 1993. I DO know about ramps and vans and Everett-Jennings and Jiffys and Quickies and PVC Shower Chairs.

This is where he was Schooled and lived since 1977. (Media Campus)

It was the first 20 plus years that were tough. Not the latter part, but I do Thank You and Appreciate the sentiment!

Re: Mac's 2009 Ramp Challenge

Talked to my regular supplier yesterday and they are in. They also referred me to a "handyman" that does a ton of free work for the handicapped and elderly. I will get with him and see what he has for contacts for organizations. Once I get through the winter it may take me a month or so to get my own house in order before giving things away though. So far it's not looking too bad for the winter..enough to survive anyways. Had 3" of snow stick yesterday...that will bring a halt to the phone calls for exterior work. I myself don't mind working in it most of the time. I like going the inside for a couple of weeks and outside for a couple of weeks...just trying schedule around the single digits and keep customers happy can be a pain.

Re: Mac's 2009 Ramp Challenge

Ramp-a-thon.com soon to be up and running.

I'll start by publishing some posts from Mac's initial thread, and then we can add more resources over the next few weeks.

Who's got ramp stuff going on?

Re: Mac's 2009 Ramp Challenge

OK, so we're debating on the tag line. I think Mac's original tag line of "f*^k it, I’ll just build ‘em a ramp” says exactly what we want to say.

Eliminate the bureaucracy, the red tape, and the wishy-washiness and just GTD, right?

Or is it offensive?

Personally I think "slightly offensive" is good in this case.

It's a site for builders to go to learn anything they might not know about how to find someone in need, organize the details, and get the ramp built. Practical, useful right now, with no red tape.

What do you think?

I'll take the consensus and roll with it.

I like it, and it may be too harsh. But if the site is for us fellow tradesmen on how to set something up like Mac did, I think it will work.

Time to Trademark the Slogan/Name/Likeness, .

I also feel that it would make sense to have a link to the site somewhere on the CT home page/headers/Nav Bar. (In due time.)

Re: Mac's 2009 Ramp Challenge

Hey guys,

I got the RAT packet from the HBA yesterday. I've had a couple of other things going on and haven't been pushing them to get it to me sooner...
I'll forward it on to Seth (along w/ some other html pages) and let him run with the website. I appreciate you working on that end of things, guy!

One thing that would be cool is to get a list of folks that are in this - get your company info to Seth and he can build a web page for participating guys.

In terms of copyright, Ramp-a-thon was first used by the WA state HBA, don't know if they copyrighted the actual name. I created that RAT graphic w/ the wheelchair so no issues there. I dunno, I wasn't too worried about the legal end of things 'cause no one's gettin' paid! If folks have better thoughts on the legal end of things, please share them. I'll be the first to admit I don't know much in that dept.

As to the tag line, we all know how worried I am about people seeing me cuss! If y'all want to use it, it's fine w/ me. We could probably come up w/ a less ofensive line that still gets the point across (esp. if ct wants to link to the site). Whereas you all know that (some) contractors are not the most eloquent of beasts, if this site gets big and the concept takes off, we should probably have a more restrained tagline. I dunno, keep kickin' in your comments and I'll think more on it myself.

Hopefully, you all had a great Thanksgiving-

Mac

Re: Mac's 2009 Ramp Challenge

The "Uckfay itlay" MUST GO. VERY unprofessional and can be VERY offensive to parents of Wheelchair-Bound Children.

The parents, from my 30 plus years of living with my "Special Needs" Brother, tend to be EXTREME in the protection and care of such a child. They tend to be Hyper Sensitive as well. Easily offended and very defensive.

Just what I have observed in my life.

Re: Mac's 2009 Ramp Challenge

Seth - I think this quote of Mac's would probably be best for the main page with some excerpts from his original one.

Quote:
Guys, this can be done where you are. We had four meetings, we had a committee of 8-10 people, set it up over 8 months, got lumberyards to donate (or reduce their price on) all the material...
5 families now have access they didn't before.

Doesn't matter if it's going on a trailer or house, they all get my best. This was not treated as a throwaway project, this was important to me to finish as tight and solid as everything else I build. Electric wheelchairs are not light, sometimes the folks aren't either! No sense in committing to do the project, then just bangin' sh*t together!

I would be more than happy to talk with anyone here about setting up something like this where you're at. If you belong to an HBA, it would be an easy enough project to implement - you've already got the contacts.

I couldn't leave my home and my business to help w/ people who've had huge, nature-type tragedy happen to them...this I can do.
Lets state what this site is for & go for it

A Link for how to organize

A Link for instructions, ADA specs

A Link for Contractors, HBA's & suppliers joining in with pictures of completed projects
For instance Mac's - his name, the 2 other contractors, HBA & who supplied material
Or HBA - 5 projects shown, all contractors associated with the build, who supplied materials

A link for those who say they will do it - but no pictures in yet???

A counter for how many ramps completed or how many people helped

A link for people to get help

By the way Mac's, his HBA & the one that founded it 5 years ago should be at the top (as the founding father's of the idea)

Just my .02 & nice job
