Love What You Do?

Do you guys love what you do for a living? Or do you just do what you do to put food on the table?

I pretty much could not see me doing anything but design/build. And when potential clients talk to me i am just so enthusatic that they pick up on it. No way am i the best salesman, but my enthusatism more then makes up for it.

Anyone else the same way?

I like what I do so much, I'd do it for free if I had to. The wife isn't so keen on that idea, however.

i do love what i do

however, it is a business.... not a hobby and one thing i learned is that i tend to make more money when im not emotionally attached to a certain project

if for any reason i become unsatisfied - i will go love something else

I have the proablem of being emotionally attached to a project. I need to figure out how to stop doing that. I always try to tell myself the better the project comes out, the more it will do for my business. So i end up doing little extra things i shouldn't do.

As a child I aquired tools and lumber and built dangerous structures, it's no wonder I'm a carpenter now. I wonder how much pain I'll be in when I get older.

Re: Love What You Do?

I certainly love the business, or at least most of it. My passion is for the selling and estimating and less for the actual production end of the process. My goal, and unfortunately has been for a few years now, is to grow to a point where I can have a production manager who would take on those responsibilities and free me up for more of the "big picture" items like marketing, selling and estimating. We're close to being that size but not quite there yet - hopefully within a year I can reach that benchmark. My problem is going to be promoting someone into the position - we're a mid-size company with all of us having been together for over 15 years so someone's going to get ticked off.

I love when a homeowner watches over your shoulder while you're working and asks the stupidest questions.

you just have to detach yourself emotionally. How?

hmm ... put it to you this way. I offer (as you know) design/build and service/repair

now, i love building pools ... but i absolutely hate fixing them.

Guess which brings a wider profit margin?? (proportionally)
Guess which jobs I'm going to "get in and get out" on?
Guess which jobs I'm NOT going to exceed my scope of work on (i.e. no extras)
Guess which jobs I AM BY FAR THE HIGHEST bidder on?

Another thing ... "little extra things"

Giving extras is literally like "buying friends." Realize that there IS a difference between "extras" and "going the extra mile."

Some people will talk sh*t about you regardless of how well you treat them or how good your workmanship is. Don't let this intimidate you into trying to please everyone. And certainly do not spend money out of pocket trying to please everyone (unless you are contractually obligated to do so).

That's not to say to NEVER give an extra. But realize who you are giving it to. You have a responsibility to provide someone a project that is of sound quality (structure and function - and aesthetically pleasing). These responsibilities are outlined in your contract. I won't get into the whole change order tangent - there's plenty of threads on this.

Remember - it's not your fault someone wants the Queen of England's backyard. We all do, right? But how are YOU going to have a backyard if you keep spending extra money/time on theirs??

Keep strict track of your time and expenses for one month and you'll see what I mean ....

Re: Love What You Do?

I love the challenge of building a business from nothing. I love doing what others say can't be done, finding a niche, creating something that nobody saw before but was there all along for anybody to see. I love creating a company that dominates the market and the competition. I love making the sale. I love bringing a customers dreams to reality, exceeding their expectations, changing their mindset and being rewarded extremely well for doing so. I love providing a place for people to come to work and feel they are part of something special, I love providing an economic future for people. I love doing things differently to shake up those who think nothing is ever going to change. I could careless about construction itself. I love people who love construction, they make good subs.

Re: Love What You Do?

I was raised in a large Sicilian family where all the men were in construction of some type. In my family as soon as you could walk you got pulled out on a job a relative had going on. So I had a pretty good collection of tools and building knowledge by age 11. I knew I would be in the trades at some point. After several years in the Marine Corps, I went to the trades, it paid the best and had the best benies for the legal things I could do..
So to get to the point, I love what I do. I like the challenge of troubleshooting a problem (especially if it is an old one) and fixing it. On installs I take pride in a fast and eye pleasing job. It feels good to accomplish something positive daily. I have been very very lucky with the contractors I have worked for and with.

30 years ago I loved it. 20 years ago I loved it. 10 years ago it was hard work that could be fun. Today, it's just hard work. 1 more house to build before I retire.

Re: Love What You Do?

I love parts of what I do, but there are also parts I hate.
If I won the lottery and never had to work again I doubt I would even consider painting the huge house I would have built.
I have had jobs that I have hated and of all the jobs I have ever had I do enjoy painting the most, but I think I could live happily without it. But since the lottery didnt draw my numbers last night i will be back out there tomorrow painting away, so i guess i will just stick with what I know and suffer through the bad times and enjoy the good.

Re: Love What You Do?

I hate getting dirty, I can't stand dirty finger nails, I've always had problems touching bathroom door knobs so I use a paper towel to open them yet I'm a master plumber go figure, but the money makes me love it and I enjoy confusing drs and lawyers with plumbing talk. I do go through two boxes of latex gloves a week though. 80 dollars a month to keep my hands clean

How many blacksmiths love their anvil?

I like what I do, or I wouldn't do it.
