Looking For Some Good Advice!

I just recently started working for a busy electrical company, as the owners assistant. He hired me because he is so busy running around all day between jobs he doesnt have time for anything else. He still has not even cancelled his answering service and hasn't had anytime to sit down with me. Basically if you hired an assistant what would be the most beneficial thing they could do for you? I would like to be an assest to his company but at this point, I'm a little lost! I would appreciate any advice!!
Thank You

Re: Looking For Some Good Advice!

I've had too many computer jobs where as the new guy I've been assigned to inventory a closet full of junk, so I'll bet your employer has thousand$$ worth of electrical parts he doesn't even know about.
  • Follow up with suppliers for backordered items
  • When a job is to be quoted/bid, you could follow up with the customer the day before to confirm the appt.
  • Inventory office supplies, make a list of what needs to be ordered
  • Offer to inventory the trucks / storage areas
  • Manage vehicle maintenance & repair
  • If you have access to the filing cabinets, start organizing them. Make a pile of things you think should be archived/thrown out, but don't start throwing things out right away.

If customers visit the office, you might de-clutter the reception area and line up a maid service to vacuum the floors & wash the windows.

This is probably pretty standard, but keep an easy to reach (not in a day runner or briefcase), notepad with you at all times that you can easily jot down anything he mumbles. He might just be thinking out loud and not realising he is suggesting something. Write it down and find a way to make it happen without having to call him several times a day. If you just kind of stay out of his way, yet make his life easier, he will know you are doing a good job.

As others have stated, keep a pen and papper pad on you at all times and keep taking notes for your boss as much as you can. Cleaning up is also a bonus but be careful not to unclutter his 'mess' if he likes it that way.

A quick inventory is great advise too. I'd start requesting some info from him sooner rather then later or else it'll lead to an unhappy work enviroment for you if you find no challenge in it.

Find a good way to communicate... maybe a notepad on his desk, maybe a Word document on the computer where you can put in questions, info, or thoughts, and he can update them as he has time.

Oh, and maybe "book" him a lunch appointment with you to talk...
