Log Home ?
Has anybody built or lived in a log home. I'm seriously considering building one, and selling it after 2 years. any info, pro's,cons, resale values. Do you get many requests for log homes? I woud like to do one, but if it will be too hard to sell for a decent profit margin I may just do stick. Any help or past experiences are greatly appreciated. thanks

Re: Log Home ?
No, but I did save alot on my car insurance
Seriously though, I had a buddy who's parents do just what your talking about, every 2 yrs they build a new pad, live in it for a few yrs, build another, sell and move. They built a beautiful log home in a sub division by the river-they actually kind of over built for the neighborhood since it was large and beautiful. They loved it, but went back to stick built homes after this one. Resale didnt pan out like they thought and I think it had to do with neighborhood and local economy, something that "rustic yet elegant" just is'nt a real "gotta have" around here so it actually sat on the market longer than any of their stick builts ever did and asking price was no more than what they typically get for a stick built. I'm sure location will have a big impact on your post sale. Personally I love the rustic value of the log homes when done like they used to be instead of just using "log siding" LOL!! |

Re: Log Home ?
There are a bunch of log home kit companies where I live, and I talked to the owner of one of them recently when I was deciding on a floor plan for my house. He spent several years building and selling log homes. He did half a dozen or so in a certain neighborhood and he says he hardly made anything off them. One problem was that he was not doing very high end homes. These were 2000 sq ft or so on 1/3 acre... people preferred stick built for their primary home. Everyone wants a log cabin, but when it comes down to it, as a first house it's not the most practical style.
