Know What Ya Got?

Reading some new threads today and I thought about an issue that's been on my mind here lately.

If I make a capital purchase, my Bobcat for example, before I buy I study so freaking much on the product I can just about disassemble and reassemble by the time I fork out the cash.

I've really noticed this in Laptops as well. I consider a grand on a laptop an investment to the biz and research the make and model carefully, however, 80% of the buyers I encounter have to ask how to turn it on.

So why is it many major buyers buy on the fly?

How many times do we have to deal with home owners that really have no clue how they're house works, more less how it's built?

And ......is our society so spoiled and rich that we can throw money at anything because we like the paint?

Re: Know What Ya Got?

I wouldn't define this as result of extra money in ones pocket. I just think the last 7 years of high-value home purchasing did turn owning a home into a novelty. Everyone seemed to be buying due to the low rates.

For instance, I live in Northern Va. My friends ages range from 22-30 years of age. More than half own homes worth 400k or more. I know most would have waited till early 30's late 20's to buy without the low rates. So, in a sense were rushed into home ownership.

They may not know how to fix a leaky sink or know what that switch does next to the bathroom. However, they are all very happy to be home owners.

However, I havent heard stories of friends purchasing "lemons" just cause they liked the paint. I am sad to hear that people are in that situation.

It time and money Bob, which one do you have more of? Some of these cats have more money than time so whip out the check book and bang out a check to somebody who can fix their problem for them.

90% of the people that I work for have their own agendas and they involve much more than I make. They have to trust you to know what you are doing, they have probably researched you as well. I often answer to a 'personal assistant'.

The fun stuff that I post here is a mix of HO's and designers but that's not my bread and butter.

People pay someone to fix their car, cut their lawn, clean their house and make their morning coffee. This does not mean they are not able.
The value is in the time your spending doing things that benifit you more.

My lawn service costs $85 a month. Could I possibly do it for that amount? No way!

Research is a good thing though, when it comes to something that you NEED and HAVE to depend on. Like a computer....everyone has one, and info can easily be transported from one to the other....your bobcat though, there might be a day where you need it to work, and it doesn't....because its a bad brand or model(not saying bobcat is.....but something similar).

Not to mention.....anymore, everything seems to be made in the same spot anyways....and if it's not then its easy to tell(look at the price)

Researching items are a good thing, but guess what, You sometimes get that deer in the headlights feel and leave it to someone who you trust or is a proffesional.

The wealthy don't need to be bothered with nuts and bolts, they just hire people to deal with it. THEIR JOB IS TO MAKE THE BIG MONEY.

Re: Know What Ya Got?

Think of it like this. Most of us can do all the work involved in a build or remodel or rehab. But it would take longer than is expected for us to do it all. Dont get me wrong. Ive had all the time in the world to get a project done and have done all the work. But I have to hire crews to do work for me to get done in a reasonable amount of time. So I guess Im doing what a homeowner does. I whip out my checkbook and let someone else take the load off and trust them.

I don't "whip out my checkbook" for anybody.

I think my point may have been largely overlooked here. Maybe I failed to properly express my feelings.

I think my original design to the question was in the range of how some one can own an expensive item like such and not understand it's workings. It would bother me to do so.

I guess it boils down to that certain satisfaction in understanding what you depend on.

However........ point counterpoint ..........My understanding on this subject only extends to the edge of the female human, and not within or beyond.

I own the following items and sleep every night not knowing how they work:
my truck, my electric toothbrush, my wife, my kids, my ice maker, my laptop, my printer, all of my power tools. On occasion I have taken apart things to fix them and have never once repaired an item to my satisfaction.

Never ever take apart a laptop to repair it because the estimate from Worst Buy was to high!

BTW, does anyone want to buy a used laptop with extra parts?

Re: Know What Ya Got?

Bob, I know how you feel. I used to be able to fix virtually everything that I owned but it's a new world, even my toaster has a computer (no lie!) and my coffee maker. I look under the hood of my trucks and it's a solid piece of plastic covering up everything plus you have to have a $35K analyzer to diagnose anything.

You got to know when to hold'em, know when to fold'em.
