Regarding new posters asking questions, Remember if someone comes to CT asking trade questions for there First post, they may be a homeowner trying to get out of some trouble that they caused by not hiring you. I am always surprised how quickly some are willing to offer up the knowledge they have spent years acquiring to a non paying homeowner. G

I would rather that competition learns how to do their jobs more professionally and leave the hacks providing the same useless services they are re-known for.
Even some contractors just do not know what they do not know and are sometimes willing to learn and upgrade their status to become more professional, but they just didn't know how or where to get the information from.
Same goes with DIY'ers. Many realize after given the proper advice, that the task is beyond their talent level and appreciate being directed into how to choose a more professional contractor. For those DIY'ers that still do decide to tackle the task, I would not want to see them get hurt.
Probably many "Informed" DIY'ers do a better job than the run of the mill hack contractors who continually underbid their chit work anyways.
I look at it as like giving advice to my Dad, who hardly ever paid for anything to be done. It may seem as if he was a Cheap Bohemian, but nothing is going to change that and he has a lot to show for his life from being frugal.

I agree with Ed. I do not like giving information away for free. However, I do not mind helping a fellow contractor. I have seen too many HO take advantage of that (as as some contractors). The way I see it is to give them just a little information and if they appear sincere then you may could give them more. But don't give away the store!

Maybe we could do like the lawyers. Put so much technology terms and legalese in the response only another contractor could decipher it.
I would like to suggest though on what we say and how we say it. We do not know these folks so a little courtesy goes a long way. You never know they may end up being a customer some day.
