Just Couldn't Believe My Ears.... .
I had just finished up in the office with the desk and the built ins. The painters had come by in the morning even though I told the GC that I wasn't finished and planned on being there for a little more than half a day to put up the desk crown molding, put on the pulls and knobs and put in the shelves and clean my stuff out of there.
I had left some cardboard on the desktop to protect it, nothing exotic and not full coverage. So as I was picking up some of my tools I see the painter sanding some spackle letting the dust fall on the desktop. They had already left some splatters on my cabinets when they were left in the room on my delivery. So I went to the guy in charge and asked if he was responsible for subcontracting the painters, he said yes. I told him what was going on and about the previous paint splatters on the cabinets. He actually said that I should have covered up my cabinets. And the finished work that I had just completed should have been covered up by me and protected. WTF? Why is it my responsibility to keep the painters paint off of my finished project. I looked at him as said I charge $250/hr for touch up and repairs. I also found a 3" scratch near the floor on the side of one of the cabinets that wasn't there when I left at 7:30 last night. I didn't say anything about it, just applied a repair. So, am I out of line thinking that the painters should either be able to paint without splattering on my work or protect it if they cannot control the splattering? Or is it really my problem to seal this thing in plastic so no paint can get to it? Am I out of line?

Re: Just Couldn't Believe My Ears.... .
Nope!
Either the painters or the GC should have done that.

Leo, you can't even see the line from where you are most of the time but this particular issue is a crock of bs.
Any painter worth his salt would keep his debris off of raw wood. Total bs that the man in charge is laying this at your feet too. I have worked all over this country and there are plenty of regional tendencies that need to be honored, but nowhere is this the way things are done. You have been railroaded my friend. Give me his number. I need to have a chat.

Re: Just Couldn't Believe My Ears.... .
Leo, you need some good analogies to prove you are right.
I just remembered that during a job last year, I completed the electrical trim on the first floor of a house with the exception of the kitchen. The granite installers smashed a three way dimmer in the dining room and the HO said that was my problem. I just laughed at him.

Re: Just Couldn't Believe My Ears.... .
It's not you getting paint splatters on everything.
This is one of the major problems with construction, that the so called pros could care less. Such a black eye and completely unnecessary.

Re: Just Couldn't Believe My Ears.... .
That is one of the things I said to him.
It's not my paint, why should I have to protect my fine woodwork from it. Gus, I'll be glad to get you his number, he should be scared already.

I don't know what world this painter is living in, but it ain't this one. The guy is an idiot. Should have told him to paint all over your cabinets if he wanted to because that just means you'll be getting even more work repairing the damage caused by him and it will be coming out of his pocket when the GC short pays him.

Re: Just Couldn't Believe My Ears.... .
I'm just an electrician, and even I know it's the painters' responsibility.
Or else Leo is responsible for the landscapers walking through the house with muddy boots leaving floaters in the toilet, the plumber's truck that leaves oil stains on the driveway, the roofers who scuff up the shingles so bad there's no granuals left and the sheetrockers who leave the house littered with sunflower seed shells and ciggy butts.

Those are just the type of analogies he needs. I was trying to think of a couple but you beat me to it. Analogy # 6 or 7 Is it the shirt manufacturers fault when you spill coffee on it?

Apparently it was McDonald's fault for that idiot of a woman who spilled coffee on her groin. If it was paint she might have had to sue SW.

Re: Just Couldn't Believe My Ears.... .
Painters are bad but flooring guys take the cake imo. I swear to god they act like monkeys and start flinging grout at one another. I've seen thinset/grout/vinyl adhesive 4 feet up the wall in gobs before. Who cares about the finished woodwork, one guy can carry a roll of carpet in the house and up the stairs grinding the sandpaper like back against anything that gets in its way.

Re: Just Couldn't Believe My Ears.... .
I had that carpet thing happen in my home a decade ago. I had nice finishe wainscoting in my house and had a new carpet installed. I com home and the wainscoting has all kinds of scratches in it from them unrolling it without a care in the world for the fixtures in the house.
