Re: Just Another Day At The HD Parking Lot....

It's the same thing here in Seattle, but they hired a State Tropper to keep them from trying to pick up work in the parking lot. They can only stand off the property and flag you down.

I'm working just 1/2 a block from one right know and I get bugged every time I walk over there. For fun we've got a guy on our crew from Thailand, he looks Mexican. We drop him off at the curb and then pick him up a few minutes later in a another truck. The day workers trip out how come he gets all the work.

Re: Just Another Day At The HD Parking Lot....

I think the next time I am slow, I am going to stand out there with a sign that says: "licensed, bonded, insured general contractor/skilled carpenter. All tools provided for all phases. $50/hr."

I wonder if I would get any business?

A few months ago we were installing when the GC comes in and tells me he saw a white guy down at the union hall with a sign "Journeyman carpenter 15 yrs experience $15 an hour"
GC was in disbelief, lived here his whole life and never saw pale skin at the hall.

They are not all Mexicans guys. They are from all of Latin and parts of Central America.

Does any one have a serious idea as to how to get this turned around?

I'm convinced they are here to stay until we don't need / want them anymore.

You won't have to drive them if nobody hired them, whether contractors stopped cutting their own throats and figured it out for themselves or the government simply enacted harsh penalties of fines and jail time for doing it. They'd take the bus back to Mexico faster then they already have been doing.

Yes. Pay them the comparable wages of any other red-blooded American so they can raise their families and live decent. If our Mexican citizens are skilled and rightfully here in the US, they should be compensated. Hiring anyone who is illegal that shouldn't be in the USA should not be tolerated.

Why are contractors upset at illegal Mexicans? As a legit contractor-don't hire them! Simple. Some of you contractors on this board got a hoarde of illegals workin' your projects as we speak...This is misdirected anger. Why give the contractor a pass for hiring the illegal, but be pissed at the illegal for taking the position?

Who's really at fault?

I am not arguing with any of your points of view. I am saying there are others that need to be dealt with also.
Fines are a good start. Look at all the success making marijuana possession a misdemeanor has done. It's not much different.

We are a society addicted to instant gratification at bargain prices. Why do you think everything is made in China. Cheap stuff and we don't have to look the cheap labor in the eye when we run to the lumber yard.
Want a brand new shipping container for a few thousand bucks? One trip accross the pond with cheap crap and nothing to send back. Sell the container, tere are tons of them here. I have to look at those everyday too. Are we on board with boycotting Chinese imports? Good luck.
Thats a bigger problem than the union halls if you ask me. Fix that.

It's been my experience that the Hispanic labor both skilled and day labor are being compensated well. Good enough to send money back to mom and dad. Tons of businesses including the US Post Office advertise 3 easy ways to send money to Mexico. WTF is up with the Post Office gettin in on the action? That answer has some dirt on it, I bet.

I'll tell you what hurts me. All of our trades are being taken over by a younger generation and it has not fit my pictures of how I thought it would go. I thought some of my own boys would take over someday. I thought I would teach a kid in the nieghborhood a trade. I thought I would pass on my hard earned lessons to the next generation of American youth. Obviously my expectations are unfulfilled. I'll have to deal with that someday.

I wonder if previous generations have had to deal with similar things. The Irish and the Italians were once the laborers of their time. Who was pissed that they were taking over the trades?

These guys are here as long as there is no one to do what they do.

That one's simple.
On line billing and payments,
e-catalogs, crappy economy for
bulk mail, UPS and Fed-Ex skimming the
most lucrative parts of the business,
and US postal still has to walk a guy
past every house in the country
6 days a week.
They are out to get any piece of
any pie they can get their fingers in.

Re: Just Another Day At The HD Parking Lot....

America, the melting pot!

Chineese labor built the railroads.
Irish and Italians built the tunnels, skyscrapers, and Interstate hwys.
Now it's the Mexicans rebuilding everything else.

Who are we, the lowly guy's out here hiring anyone that was willing to work in the building boom of the last 15 years. Now that the story is catching up with us, we're all pizzed.

Who allowed this to happen? The government? State or Federal? The major corporations that funded all the building?

I bet if you asked they would all say, "No. it wasn't us. We told our foremen to hire people. We didn't put any restrictions on it. Just get the job done!"

Pass the buck! It's not out fault! We didn't do it!

Now lets sit back and send all of our plant jobs over to old mexico and get the work done for pennies. Lets send our telecommunications over to India and Pakistan. We need to stimulate their economies and keep the globe making money.

But wait, what happened to our people over here?

Sorry Johnny, we have no food for your family and you'll have to live in a box under a bridge.

HEY! You live in America, the land of the free and home of the broken dream!

..............OK it's out of my system now!!!

Walmart has western union to Mexico for free... If you want to send some money to Grandma in the next state, it's $10

That one is easy

But don't they have a union to protect them?

There is no comparison. I don't know any regular drug users who live like I do, have what I have or have what I have to lose. Comparing fines and jail times to drug addicts and comparing them to a legitimate person with a lot to lose is not the same thing.

You slap a $150,000 a year mid level executive with the threat of 3-5 years in jail and a $100,000 fine and you see how fast things change.

These guys are here as long as there is somebody to pay them to be here. Mexico is hurting because of our recession. Tens of thousands of illegals deported themselves due to not finding work to be hired for. No job, no reason to be here. Adious.

Wow, I find it hard to believe you don't know anybody that gets high once in a while that has a real life. You probably do but they don't want to tell ya about it cuz you such a boy scout.
We aren't talking about drug addicts in the gutter sense of the term.

There is a comparison, both are illegal and the masses turn the other way because why? There is a dirty answer in there somewhere. Both are not something you are going to legislate your way out of. We are dealing with addictions and livelihoods. Supply and demand.
Ya think the politicians, judges and lawyer's would pass a law they may be in violation of? They are addicted to. Maybe to both.

I agree with you, without the charge and with more a skeptical outlook on the gears driving this runaway train.

Yeah I'm on the front lines of both issues.

I spent 5 yrs in Durango CO too. Lots of lefty cigs there too.

We can agree to agree through different lenses, right?

Do you think it's a sign of age that we see more fault in things than we did when we had more hair?

Jails are so overcrowded now the last thing they wanna do is send more ppl there. We got hardcore crack dealers pleading out and getting probation because the state/county has nowhere to put em. My brother has 250 ppl on his probation list to see once a week plus do court proceedings on thursdays. So these drug dealers take their fine, 2 years probation and go right back to what they were doin before. I know i got off topic but the problems in this country run so deep atm, illegals are just the tip of the iceberg.
