Junk Haulers...
I am on a quest to eliminate 99% of the BS i do throughout each day. Once thing i seem to waste time doing is making runs to the dump. Alot of jobs do not have enough garbage to call for a dumpster, yet they have enough where it is 2-3 pick up truck loads. I end up making the dump runs since my foreman are the only employees i have with DLs so i do not want them to leave the jobs.
Would it be best to call a junk hauler to haul the stuff away. It seems like we have alot of companies out there with old 1980s trucks that just do junk hauling. Seems like this could be a economic way to haul my garbage off the job sites affordable. The second option would be to get a 20 yard dumpster drop at a yard and have all the crews bring the garbage home each night. What would you do? |

Re: Junk Haulers...
I park my '82 F-250 on the site with signs, and make a run when needed.
Others do it right. They buy a dump trialer, put signs on it, and park it on-site, and make runs as needed. And others put a 20-30 dumpster in their yard. I think that's a mistake at times. The men load the truck with junk, then unload it into the dumpster. Then, you still have to pay to dump it! After they've already handled the crap twice. Which is fine IF you're talking about 3-4 trash bags of trash every now and then. Bottom line, you're gonna look at these suggestions and hopefully, you will find something that fits YOUR situation. No 1 solution will always be right.

Re: Junk Haulers...
Tried that. If you leave the dumpster on site overnight, everybody and his brother will dump thier own stuff in. Two years ago we put a box on site for dirt that we dug out of 50 post holes. Even though the box was clearly labeled clear fill only, the next morning there was renovation trash, broken furniture, ordinary trash, even a tv. We took everything out and left it on the boulevard. Finished the dirt load and had it hauled away. Next thing we know we got a letter from the city giving us 24 hours to get all the trash out(absolutely NONE of it was ours) or face a $5000 fine. We worked for 5 hours to get it out. Overnight, the medium size pile of junk became a big pile of junk. I guess if people see a place to put garbage, they'll put it there!
We've since gotten our own dump truck, so on most jobs we do our own removal. It saves a lot of money, because we our own labour is cheaper than the dump charges from the local dump. |

Or you could buy a dump trailer and leave it on sight. A new one is probably about $5,000 and if you spens alot of time making dump runs, it would pay for itself within a year. Of course you would charge for it as if it was a dumpster of similar size.

Re: Junk Haulers...
We have couple of guys with a pick-up and a trailer, one found in yellow pages, other one (better of the two I think) I wrote down the number on his truck while stuck in traffic. Second guy hauled off @ 800sf rotten 2X decking, bunch of old joist and some posts for $150--all I had to do was pile it near the driveway. Only use dumpsters for big long term deals. Like said before, no fun to pay to haul neighborhood's trash.
As for hauling it myself---Life's to short to spend it down in the dumps

Re: Junk Haulers...
For me a 10YD is $215 20YD is $235 and 30YD is $280. I just get the 30 even if I only need 10, then if the neighbors toss stuff in I dont get screwed.

Re: Junk Haulers...
I use an old pickup bed trailer and haul as needed... whoever has time takes it to the dump, and if it doesn't happen soon enough, I do it on saturday. Works ok, but I'd rather have a dump bed, also it kinda looks bad, having my old beater trailer on a job site. Might upgrade sometime, but man, their spendy.

Re: Junk Haulers...
I paid a junk hauler $400 bucks to take a load once, and three days later the owner of a coffin making buisness calls me up accusing me of illegally dumping the trash behind his warehouse. I had a document in the trash with my name on it.
Bottom line is I had to go get it and haul it to the dump myself. |

Re: Junk Haulers...
I do work in downtown Chicago, dumpsters are not an option, there is no where to put it. The GC's we work for arrange a spot in the unit we are working in and the trash goes there, every other day or so they have a trash hauler come in and take it away during demo. During rough in, they have it done once a week.

Re: Junk Haulers...
I hadn't learned my lesson yet. Now I bring my daily debris home and stack it in the driveway and piss my wife off, then take it to the dump myself when it reaches a ton's quantity or I hire my current junk hauler who provides reciepts for transactions. Most of my jobs don't justify a dumpster.

This post tempts me to get my 1 ton dump truck fixed. Kinda figure ppl can rent the big dumpsters cheaper than I could let that thing set on a job site though.

Re: Junk Haulers...
Include the cost of a dumpster in the job bid and spend your time on more important issues than hauling trash to the dump. In our area, we can't haul anyway unless we're a licensed refuse hauler so it makes the decision even easier. I spell out how many dumpster loads we include in the bid and the client pays all refuse costs above that amount. Easy and clean. A fully loaded 30 yd. dumpster with typical construction debris runs around $600 here - tops.

Re: Junk Haulers...
Luke has it right... pass that debris cost on to the owner... it's his project, anyway.
I just give my clients the number for the dropbox service and let them make the calls. Too many recliners and yard trimmings I paid for in the past... r |

Re: Junk Haulers...
I bought my 1-1/4 ton dump for $1K and it's been humping it for 5+ yrs. Just something to think about.

Re: Junk Haulers...
Pick you up an old Uhaul box truck for a couple grand and voila a big advertizing space and a huge trash bin that can be locked up at night. When it gets full drive it to the dump, rinse and repeat. A cheap paint job on the cab and vinyl overlays would have it looking good enough to park anywhere.

Dump runs are a waste of time and wages. Stack it up and leave that to the pros.

Try this;
http://www.tubsinc.com/ Not sure if they are in your area they are local but I would think simalar companies would be in all the major cities. They work perfect for me with small jobs. Pretty reasonable prices too.
