Jobsite Keys

How do all you G.C.'s deal with keys for a jobsite? I often have jobs where I have to stash a key somewhere for my subs to get in, and often they have a problem with putting the damn thing back. Sometimes it's in the door, sometimes it disappeares altogether.... Of course no one is man enough to fess up. Any suggestions? What do y'all do when you have to lock a job up? Chris

Most of our jobs you have to sign for the key from the concierge.

We have done jobs where the GC uses a keybox like the ones used by realtors.

Re: Jobsite Keys

Our favorite method is using an electronic door lock on the front door. The combination can be set for the subs to use, and then changed once the job is finished. No keys to lose.

The customer inherits the lock as a benefit of having us on the job, or the lock is removed and the old lock is reinstalled.

Re: Jobsite Keys

Since our jobs usually do not have lots of subs freely flowing in and out, it is usually pretty easy to know who had the hidden key last, and he will get the hell aggravated out of him until it is delivered back to the job. I have a key for every job that is "mine only" and goes no farther than my truck or pocket.

Re: Jobsite Keys

Thanks guys! I am gonna look into some kind of electronic lock that can be removed later. My problem with the realter type locks is that I know I will fall into the same situation where someone finds it way too much work to put it back. It's a shame I often feel like just a glorified babysitter. Chris

Re: Jobsite Keys

We use a realtor type box, but it mounts to something instead of hangin on the knob. We hide them pretty good and have never had to take one down. Every HO loves them. Most of our work is on vacation rentals so its nice to have a key onsite.

My response was in reference to empty job sites. Occupied remodels/additions never are given entry by "generic" crews from any trade. Our plumber and electrician have worked with us for 15 years, so with the owners ok, they are given access . Some new customers are not comfortable with this, since they do not know these guys, so even they will have a GC supervisor present, or can coordinate to work when the HO is home.

Agree with you completely. When the owner gives me a key to his house and alarm code, I am responsible for everything in that house anytime anyone associated with me enters the door.
