Job Site Time Keeping
I am researching a way to properly capture time and attendance at various job sites. I would like feedback on what others are using..timeclocks or GPS enabled programs on their phones. Any pros and cons of specific systems would be much appreciated.

Re: Job Site Time Keeping
Somebody pitched me a time clock system a while back that utilized little chits that were passed under a reader to punch in and punch out. pretty expensive system though.

From another discussion:
Quote:
With Quickbooks integration and Direct Deposit payroll coming, an ongoing bottleneck has been fixed. Forever! Also, we get to check labour budgets at any moment, Check who is working where, what time they were in, every morning. There is no rounding up time, you get paid for every second worked. Costs $5 per person a month.

Re: Job Site Time Keeping
I went through the demo process with the jobclock last year ( www.exaktime.com ). The program was efficient, allowed for hot sync to my pda and I liked the idea of paying for actual work time. They use a green tab to clock in, red out, and yellow for lunch and breaks. I did the math and the $2,600 investment probably would've paid off easily in a year for 'stolen' (even accidentally) time, but I opted not to go for it. I sat my main super down and changed his bonus schedule to reflect percentage of profit on the job and changed him from hourly to salary. He know keeps the time to the minute b/c it affects his pocketbook. The switch worked for me and saved me the cost of the program, but most of the time it is not that simple.

Re: Job Site Time Keeping
I guess in Iowa we don't have the rift raf everyone else has, as a lead-framer, I keep track of my crews hours and my boss either comes to the jobsite and takes the time cards out of my pickup or I text the hours to him....we have never had any problems, he has three crews, we all do it that way....

Re: Job Site Time Keeping
I salute you, bighammer. I think the majority of time sheet theft is due to lack of organization by the field super/foreman and not keeping it to the dime. For awhile, I had a lot of 3:10's turn into 3:30's and etc. If you pay an extra 1.5 hours a week x 5 guys at an average rate of $15.00 per hour you are eating $112.50 per week or $5,850.00 per year. The pennies turn into dollars really fast.

Re: Job Site Time Keeping
This was an issue for the company I work for prior to my hiring there. About a couple of months ago, I came qith a quite simple solution to this time/schedule situation:
Our employees have to call me when they arrive to the job site in which I than write it down in my planner, which I carry with me at all times. If they go out to a hardware store to purchase anything they might need, they need to call me, which at that point I write down the time they arrived there and left. They than have to call me at the time they arrive back at the job site. If they don't leave the job site for anything else, all they have to do is call me when they leave. Maybe not 100% full proof, but it does help out. Plus, there's been circumstances in which some of the employees have learned the hard way what happens when they don't update their "status". An employee one day arrive at the job site at aroung 8 in the morning. He worked up until 1 in the afternoon because he needed to go to Home Depot. He never called me back to indicate at the time he left Home Depot or at the time he arrived to the job site. Needless to say he only got paid for those 5 hours, rather than the 10 hours he put in that day. From this point forward they know it's a must to call. Again, not the best way to go about it, but it's a solution, at least while we figure out a better one.
