Re: It's Chaos In Scotland

Hey - do you mind if I expand the intended focus of your thread to the general state of affairs in Scotland? I've sometimes mused about moving there, even if just for a few years.

I was looking at stats a while ago. Population is someting like 95% Scot by origin, so pretty much the only place on the planet a Scot can immerse himself in his heritage. But I understand there are political forces over there that are determined to destroy the Scottish national identity with multiculturalism. With only 5-million of you left, and the millions of people migrating these days, Scottishness seems a pretty fragile thing that could very easily be lost to the world.

All the more worrisome is what's going on in England - where people are fleeing by the tens of thousands each year because, to paraphrase, "England's not England anymore". And they're right next door.

But that's the impression from reading the web. What's the atmosphere really like, straight from a Scot?

I had to actually vacate Florida due to the mess.
Kansas City is virtually untouched by the insanity, people are spending money here like it was water.
Thank God, I did not want to have to relocate yet again because of the economy!!

Hope things get better in Scotland!

England has always been multi cultural for as long as I have been around,
and with Scotland it has, as you say, been pretty much Scottish. up until a few years ago until the last of the old Russian dominated territories joined the european union. Then like overnight there was this seething mass of Polish, Checz, Bulgarians to name but a few, mostly destined to join our building boom. Buy to let landlords never had it so good, putting large amounts of migrants into tiny houses and flats(condos) and creating small communities of eastern europeans. These people who joined the building industry were absolutley hopeless but they worked for peanuts, and you if pay peanuts you get monkeys. Unfortunatley for us seasoned builders because they were cheap they drove our rates dowward. To give you an example, In 2000 I was earning around £12 ($8/9)an hour now in 2008 nearly 2009 The average hourly wage is between £9.50 & £11 a good percentage of this drop can be laid fair and square at these migrant workers and the contractors who are taking advantage of all this to pay below union rates.

You could substitute USA and Mexicans into your paragraph and be describing the United States.
