Interesting Attic Insulation Findings

I sided/soffit/roofed-tore all wood off down to trusses/and windowed this new place a few yrs back, got lazy and never installed the poly chutes before hanging soffit figuring I would blow in more insulation up there a short time later...well we all know that short time later did'nt happen. until a few yrs later since I'm getting tired of being cold with stat turned waay down. All the pockets above the top plate were cleared of previous blown in "wool" insulation and I installed center vent soffit all around.

Well, yesterday I was up installing chutes since we're blowing in Sat. and I found why we've been soo cold in the living room. On the north/northwest and even south/south west side of the house there were HUGE piles of insulation stacked up, as I crawled over there I noticed the front of my house and south side obviously had soo much air/wind coming up through the soffit it literally drifted my existing blown in insulation like a snow drift. There was a good 3-4' from top plate to interior side of house with nothing but clear drywall-meaning no insulation at all due to drifting. I've never seen this before and was kind of suprised to say the least...too much air flow up there LOL!!!

So installed all my chutes in between every truss-which was not fun since it's a hip and after stapling up blocked the area under chute to ceiling and then pakced in as much existing blown in I could so I can go hog wild Saturday with the hose.

Let's just say it was a lesson learned that I never expected

Yeah, the inspectors are getting mighty fussy around here with windwash. Sometimes it's for good reason.

Let's just say that might be the reason for the influx in your power bill.

Always block the soffit no matter what.
