Imagine The Contractor(s) Who Built This..

CERNs new Large Hadron Collider in Switzerland. Scientific exploration at the atomic level using a ring of magnets 100m underground, 27Kilometers in diameter.

Details on what it is and what it does: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Large_Hadron_Collider

Just imagine the amount of precision required to get everything in place perfectly.

The photographs of this thing really quite beautiful.

http://www.boston.com/bigpicture/200..._collider.html

In laymans terms, think Ghostbusters proton accellerator, only much much bigger. And here, they are going to 'cross the streams' to test some theories.

A good science-fiction story to read about this is Flash Forward from Robert J Sawyer.

When they crank this puppy up, there is a very slight chance that it could destroy the Earth. But it is monkey-flying-out-your-ass odds, so I wouldn't worry about it.

It is still not as bad ass as this would have been, though:

There is a book my Michael Preston called Blasphemy about a group that builds a giant partical accelerator in the Nevada desert that was really good.

They are exploring the origins of the Big-Bang theory. When two particles of matter collide at a such a speed that new energy and matter is formed. Very cool stuff to prove/disprove many physics theories.

Here's a link to Petranek's TED.com speech on the countdown to Armegedon. The topic of this thread is 1 of his 10 life as we know it ending events. The thing I love about it is he manages to talk about the destruction of our species and get laughs at the same time.

In I think one of the most hilarious moments of my life, the FIRST comment to the story says everything:

"This thing is going to kill us all.

I haven't laughed so hard in years...

Here's a lovely rap by some major science geeks at CERN about what they are trying to do there.
