I'm Trying To Find The Numbers

Hey guys and gals,
I am trying to find numbers that show how many contractors that have left Michigan, Here in this State we are getting saddled with a 4.3% Income tax and also a Service Tax of 6.35% we have to start charging or collecting December 1st. So if anyone knows where I might get numbers to show how many Businesses that have left Michigan would appericate it. I am still here in Michigan but I do believe the writing is on the wall. Time to pack it up and leave Michigan in the rear view mirror. I hate that I have to start over after 22 years in Business, It just pisses me off I have to leave the place I have called Home for 50 years. Thanks to Jenny Grandhole

I'm sorry to hear that. WA state has a similar tax on labor and most HO's didn't realize. Their state tax was 8.2% I believe and on a 100k project, they get quite a surprise. Then there was the B&O tax...not to be confused with the BO tax, which was tiny, but at the end of the year, if you were grossing a mil, then you were getting pissed at the legislators.

Taxes suck.

Why do you have to leave? Your customers will still be there unless the whole state ups and moves. And it's not necessarily better anywhere else.

When you give them a quote, just remind your customers to not forget about the new additional 6.35% service tax (I assume this is a sales tax on services) that their state legislators and governor added. I'm sure that it might slow things down a bit at first but people will always need your services. And if you keep reminding them that it's not your fee but their governments fee then it just might get revoked.

I'm not sure I understand the 4.3% income tax. You weren't paying income tax before? I'd be delighted with a 4.3% income tax.

Reading the news, looks like it was raised from 3.9% to 4.35% but it looks like it will drop back down to 3.9% by 2015.

Overall it doesn't sound exorbitant to me.

Re: I'm Trying To Find The Numbers

Well The reason I need to move is there are no jobs coming in and no calls for estimates, I was talking with the owner of the BM paint store where I get my paint and he said it has to be the worst year they have ever seen. a lot of guys are in the same boat as myself. I am two house payments away from living back on the streets. It's so F&^$ED up here they remodel companies that have work are low balling all the tradesmen, I did a job for this guy had to spray out a basement ceiling with all the pipes and HVAC duct work well I gave him a price of $300.00 to do it, He pissed and moaned and then said well alright, So I go to do the job after waiting all to hear from him about the color, white or black were the choices, they wasted the whole day calls me at 3:30 in afternoon I tell him I'll be there first thing in the morning. I show up and the HO has her painters painting basement walls I can the guy and tell him I have to cover walls with plastic and that it will be an extra $150.00 He says NO WAY, I aint paying that. I tell him fine, I tell the other painters and say sorry but theres gonna be over spray. So anyways I spray it out it cost me $160.00 in paint it took me four hours so I submit my bill and this clown tells me I don't pay subs but once every two weeks and my book keeper only comes in every other week so if you didn't get your bill in on time you'll have to wait. Well now I'm looking at not getting paid for another two weeks and the job has been done for two and half weeks now. I find out this guy treats all his subs like crap, I wish I would have known this before I did any work for the a hole. He did the samething to the drywall guys, they did a kitchen for him charged $800 their board and mud cost them $345.00 plus they had to drive a hour and a half one way. it took them 5 days to get it done three guys the kitchen was 20 x 15.
As for Taxes we are on of the highest Taxed States in the country. Just on cigrettes I believe it's $1.65 Tax per pack. S*&t just to take a Taxi ride it's going to be a 6.35% Tax. I have no work lined up and winter is on it's way. Michigan is a F%^&ED up place to live right now.
