A lady calls me at the office today. She has a rental property with a pool that needs replastering and is looking for a referral. No problem, I give her the name of a good and reputable company.

Her: Oh No, I can't afford that.

Me: Pardon me? What do you mean?

Her: Well, I have a tight budget.

(Here I assume that she has already gotten some bids and they are too high for her)

Me: Well, Ma'am, are you suggesting that I refer you to someone who is going to a crappy job for a cheap price?

Her: Well, the guys that actually DO the work, they are just laborers, right? Can't I hire them to do it?

(I put it on speaker at this point for the general amusement of the office)

Me: Ma'am, Let me explain how this works. You hire some guys to plaster the pool, and, if they even show up and finish the job, you have to have it removed and redone in a short period of time. Who exactly are you going to call for warranty repair?

Her: They should be able to do it, it isn't that hard.

Me: Ma'am, to remove the shoddy work and replace the plaster will cost at least 3 times what you will pay to have it done right.

Her: So can you give me a referral?

Me: No ma'am. Good Day! <click>

Wow...

I had a call the other day.Guy wants we to come give him an estimate on a bathroom remodel.Ok fine.I set up a time,the next day at 3:00.He calls me two more times in the next half hour by mistake...No biggie.
Later on in the day he calls again and says "You're going to be here tonight at 5:00 right.".I remind him that we agreed on tomorrow at 3:00..

Ok so tomorrow comes and it is around 1:00.I am getting ready to pick my daughter up from school when the phone rings...
"Hi it's Mr. Crazy customer.My wife and I are at CostCo....",I think "Great he is going to postpone"...So he says "My wife has to go somewhere right now.Can you come pick me up?"
I told him my insurance doesn't cover passengers.

It is so very slow that it would take a lot more to keep me from at least looking at a job...And yes he really did ask me to come pick him up.
He was actually a nice guy.Late 50's,just kind of strange.Nice house.
Made me put plastic grocery bags over my boots.He had old HARDWOOD floors.
He really had no idea what he wanted done or what kind of costs where involved.I did my best to sell him and sent them a bid.

I had a guy last year call me when I was on my way to get the contract signed and pick up a check...Asking to meet him at Costco so I could P/U his new storage shed and deliver it to the jobsite...since I was going that way anyways.

Lucky for him I wanted the job.

had a women call me a while back, initially she wanted a large custom mantle with with a built in computer desk on one side of it and a entertainment unit on the other, all paint grade nothing too fancy so i look at it get some measurement from there she wants a electrical upgrade and 1 closet removed + the bathroom completely redone for $6000, i told her everything that would be involved and theirs no chance in hell all that could be done for $6000, gave her a price of $1100 for the mantle and builtins, which she was cool with but she struck as the type who wont pay so i told her the large reno i was currently working on had run into some major structural issues and weve been set back by atleast 3 weeks and were trying to make up that time by working longer hours. that was the last i heard from her

Went to look at a basement remodel project last week. I meet with the homeowner (who is 6'3" tall) and walk down to the basement which has a 6'0" ceiling height. I'm 6'5", so it's even worse for me down there, my head is between the joists. First question I asked was is it in the budget to bust up the slab, dig it out and underpin the foundation? "Oh, nooooo" says the customer.

He wants to make an office, bedroom and bathroom down there though. And no, it's not in his budget to at least install an egress window either.

Naturally, I passed.
