I Wish I Was Dumb And Broke For A Week

My phone never quits ringing,

Friends, family, anyone I know, always calling looking for work, to borrow money, borrow a tool, have me look at this, fix that, yada yada.

I honestly can't remember the last time I asked anyone for anything.

I don't mind helping here and there, but I'm about to start working weekends so I have an excuse NOT to do probono work.

Okay, done venting

I would be grateful if I were you. There's a lot of people who aren't working right now. Like me.

You could be the one asking for work, money, tools, or
anything else. I have been in your shoes and I would
rather they come to me than me have to ask for help.

As Magnettica said, a lot of people are out of work and
lucky for you, your not. Congrats!

When I get asked to do something for free because they're friends or relatives, - - I tell them I was hoping they would pay double, - - what with our common bond 'n all.

They won't consider it, - - but it may brighten that dim bulb for 'em . . .

I'm not working much either bro. Old aquaintance that I had'nt seen for a few years called me a while back. Wanted me to help him build a tray ceiling above his hot tub in the sun room. Guy does'nt even own a hammer. You know the rest of the story. I don't ask anyone for anything. Hate being used. But at the same time I will help anyone when they're down and out that will help themselve's.

I am greatfull for any work I get thease days..BUT...I am getting tired of hearing..."With this economy we don't have a lot of money to spend."
Ok I can understand that...But if you are so broke then WHY ARE YOU WANTING TO REMODEL YOUR KITCHEN,BATH,PATIO ECT.?
It's not like the kitchen you have now does not work..You can still cook in it..Is their life going to end if they don't get new granite?

...end rant...

Well, you summed up why I chose to move 3000 miles away...

Hey Jack, you ever wonder why these people use the economy BS line? These are the same people whether the economy is good or bad that have the same hourly paying job and make the same now as they always did

Re: I Wish I Was Dumb And Broke For A Week

I can solve your problem.

Step 1: Send me all your money

Step 2: Whack yourself in the head with a rubber mallet 11-12 times and then go lay down.

If you're still rich and smart next week, repeat steps 1 & 2.

Kill to birds with one stone. Send ME your money, Making you stupid... and you can save yourself the mallet!

No, maybe what you really wish for is that everyone else around you not be broke... so they woudn't look for freebies.

Re: I Wish I Was Dumb And Broke For A Week

ya know ive come to find out that it just doesent matter how good or bad times are people are always looking for a freebie and the ones with the most money are the worse.im not saying i dont like to help people out,but most tend to take advantage. i wonder what these people would do if they dident know anyone and had to pay full price for a contractor that they dont even know or can trust. i dont mind doing things for family or close friends for free, but everyone else gets charged. friends and aquaintances do get a break but they still pay.they would have to pay someone anyway and at least they know there getting a good quality job at an extremely good price.just ask urself how good of friends these people r to u if they keep trying to take advantage of u. just my opinion. good luck.

Damn, it just can't be said any better.

I guess some people are just looking to ha e the upper hand no matter what the deal. They need to feel like they got over on someone to make the deal worthwhile to them.

I have customers call, schedule my appointment knowing exactly what it will cost, when I am done, they still try to get a discount. Some people really can use a break and some people are just cheap.

I am going to use your line the next time I get the "economy" BS, it may not be a popular response we to the customer, but I don't like to work for people that beat me up on price.

Re: I Wish I Was Dumb And Broke For A Week

I have had to implement an extra commandment into my business. I don't loan money...period. I'll advance up to $100.00 against Friday's check, but won't make any special trips or arrangements to do so and not more than once per month. I have had to absolutely quit doing work for any friends or immediate neighbors. I just tell them that I value our friendship more than their work. I always refere them to a very good contractor and tell them that I will not under any circumstances be asked to 'be the contractor friend that will inspect the work' as I can't stand when that happens to me. They are required to do their own due dilegence.

A few years ago I hired my sistes, now ex, husband from a police deputy job and doubled his salary. It took me a full year and paying him for a month to not even work to get rid of him even though I knew he wasn't going to work out the first week. I had a somewhat friend in the neighborhood ask me to put a metal roof on his house...actually he asked if he bought the material could he pay my guys cash to install it. I relented against my better judgement to help him out and the result of that was he ended up being 'one of those guys' to work with and stood over them the entire time telling them how to do their job and then wanted them to come back and put more screws in his ridgecap in case we had a 400 mph wind come in and rip it off. They installed the roof per mfg specs in the first place. I sent them out on two different occassions to make him happy and he sent them away because he didn't want to here them trampling on the roof while he was in the house doing whatever. The end result was him 'getting disgusted' with my the way I run my business even though 'my business' didn't do the work in the first place. He informed me that he was going to hire the guy across the street to put the screws in for $30.00 and threw in the fact that he would have done the roof labor for X and X amount. At my breaking point, I informed him to be careful when he placed those screws and the $30.00 you know where.

I don't do it anymore! I'll go broke before I even consider it again. Business is business, freinds are friends, and family is family. They do not mix in the least. My dad always told me that's why they call it Show'Business' not Show'Friends'.

Re: I Wish I Was Dumb And Broke For A Week

I hear you. I'm a guy that knows how to do just about everything, so I have no need to ever ask anyone for help.

Seems like everyone I know always needs help. I'm not sure what it feels like to not know how to do something or atleast figure it out. I guess some of just aren't lazy enough to ask someone else for help.

Sometimes is easier to say No! They be mad at you but you'll eliminate the headaches.

There is a saying... what is the best way to stop a begging friend or relative from calling...loan them some money. They'll be running from you and won't take you're call.
