I Was Sooooooo High...

I had my one day a year playing with big machinery today!

Painting the gables on old home. I think I have a bit of a death grip on the rail in this pic.

Re: I Was Sooooooo High...

The biggest I have ever run was a 60'. We had to rent a 150' to paint a hotel and the guy that we had run it was a nut. I showed up on the job shortly after it was delivered. The machine was jerking back and forth. I go up to the floor where the basket was and ask out the window if there was something wrong with the equipment??? He says "no I was just trying to see if I could get the tires to bounce off the ground"

Yup, rotating it is pretty much a guessing game. Will it smash into the house or not?

I always turn it, raise it, then extend it. Rotating and even raising or lowering at med to full extension is not recommended.

Judging from the peak of that gable, you could plan to do the whole job w/o coming down to the ground to reposition the man-lift. There would be sway as you moved, but certainly not SO problematic that you feel you'd need to drop back to the ground to take care of it...

ETA: Funny title for the thread, man! I came in here thinking of something completely different!

Idiot manufacturers! Then WHY does it have "Full Extension"?

It is all about Insurance Premiums!

Re: I Was Sooooooo High...

That position was for the picture. Still though, I had to do a bit of rotating at 3/4 extension to work my way into some tight spots.

The worst thing was after the pic was taken. I went to lower the thing and hit the drive joystick by mistake. Why do they make it possible to DRIVE at full extension I want to know?

Thanks again man. It only took two full wraps around my body to make it fit.

I think it may have a little brown paint on it now. Ummm...well I think it's paint.

The harness prohibits you from doing the life-saving leap 10 feet from fatal impact.

Re: I Was Sooooooo High...

I just installed some murals up in Foxboro MA, and some of them were pretty big. Did some work off a 60' articulated lift. Even with the safety harness, it took about a half hour before I could unlock my knees, and about another hour before I could unclench my ass. Fun stuff; builds character.

Re: I Was Sooooooo High...

Id like to have one of those machines. They are wroking on teh hospital and I could watch the workers from teh room my sister was in. it must have been 150' off the ground and the guys climbed out of the basket and onto the roof with about 14" of space between the basket and the edge of the roof.

On the back side they had another lift that must have been a 250', that thing was huge, I never seen one that massive before.

was working on a church here in my hometown last year.they had one rented for the carpenter to repair some roof flashing.we used it to fix some loose brick above the roof line.working about 40 foot in the air and my right hand man and i are one to roof working.my laborer is on the ground, and i guess he got bored.i look down and he is shimming up the damn boom.he is half way up by the time i see him,and i blow a gasket.he decided that he should slide back down instead of getting more of an ass chewing than what he was getting.

Have you guys seen the lifts that hang over and reach under bridges. I have seen them on bridge inspections but have never been in one. I bet its a little nerve racking.
