I never did quite figure that out, but altogether it was 7" thick. It was the flooring behind the bar in a tavern that's been open 20 hours a day, 7 days a week for at least 75 years.

That's a lot of beer.

Apparently, every time the floor got so bad that all the bartenders looked more looped than their patrons as they staggered back and forth, they'd just add another layer. Permanently damp but not rotted (because of the alcohol?), all those layers were homogenized into a spongy mass that we literally just shredded apart with clawhammers.

That smell pretty well put the kibosh on my beer-drinking days. <shudder>

I ripped up 9 layers of vinyl in some apartments once.....like walking on a sponge. Each layer had been glued to the next with no skim coat. The bottom layers were what me and a buddy like to call vinyl pudding.....yep it smells just like you imagine only worse

Almost. Probably the only thing that saved me is that I've had the pleasure of dealing with some pretty yummy plumbing work here and there over the years.

Now leave me alone and don't make me think of that experience again for another decade or so.

Not sure what it tallies in thickness... Flexitech, luan, VCT, 1/2" ply, cushion back carpet, and lineolium... all on top of beautiful white oak that should have never been covered up.

6 layers. Ended up cutting 4" wide strips with a circular saw and pried like hell. Only do them T&M now; even charge them for the saw blades. Oh yeah, the time charges are at the upper end of my hourly scales.
