How Long Could You Work?

I was wondering how long those over 50 or approaching would be willing to work. I knew a roofer who was 66 and still going strong. I'm 50 and still enjoy what I do but will I still feel upto it if I had to work till I was 60 or more?

One of the guys that worked for my current boss retired when he hit 70, I basically replaced him. I got into the trade a little late, so if I want to maximize my union pension I need to work till I am 65.

The commercial glass company that is installing windows in our current project is still operated by the founder, 85 years old...he came out and measured the openings himself....he did say he wouldn't be doing the install since he can't handle the weight or the drilling....but wow...85, and no plans to retire.

Re: How Long Could You Work?

I'm 55 hope to hit at least 65 on the job.
Had a good friend that loved to garden. Started having some health problems when he was in his early 70s. One day his wife went to look for him and found him out in the garden. His last day spent in the garden. It was over quickly, no hospital, no drugs, no nursing home. The way to go. I work for too many people who sit around and watch TV all day except when they have to go to the doctor for more medicine to add to the mix.

My wife will be able to retire her job at 56,I would like to have someone trustworthy doing the mechanical side of my business by then so I can enjoy time with my wife in-between bids.I've got 12 more years to make it happen.I'm worried I won't be able to back off a little when the time comes,we'll see.

Re: How Long Could You Work?

I'm 57 still do some framing, built a brick chimney to stay on schedule but mostly I remodel. I am every bit as fast as the younger guys, probably only because I don't make as many mistakes. I can fly when I do trim. But it hurts in the morning some days. I got remarried and have 11 and 13 year old girls so no retiring for this old warhorse. No complaints either, I still like my job.

I'm 186 years old in construction years (they're like dog years ya know) or 56 in human years. I'm ready to retire. I hurt to much.

That's a lotta years man. Sometimes I'm ready to retire until I sit around the house for one day. I thought it took cold a** weather to hurt since that is the only time I hurt. Except roof framing that will get cha to hurting.

Yes, she does...YOU!

If I get too old for the field, I'll do the office full time. If I get too old for the office, I'll put myself on "consultant" status and stay at home collecting my consultant fee.

You need to move out of moma's house before you even talk about retirement.

Re: How Long Could You Work?

Well,lets see?
I'll be 61 when my son graduates High School, maybe on to college, four years,so that's 65,helping pay off college, around 70,few years to recoup savings for retirement,75.
Oh I figure maybe around 80 ,if I can figure out how to get my wheelchair up a ladder.

The way I see it right now,the snow and rain days out of work are my retirement days.I can probably enjoy them more now than later , when I probably won't be able to do what I'm use to doing physically.

I've fully excepted that, short of hitting the Lottery, I'll be dying on the job. (With a smile on my face!) wouldn't have it anyother way.

Re: How Long Could You Work?

Fourty years old and I'm feeling it. I've been caught in avalanches, tumbled down cliffs, and pumbled in many a class 4 rapid. Currently in a phase out mode. Phasing out the framing, doing more finish and electrical.

Re: How Long Could You Work?

34 and I hope to still stay busy and working until i'm in my mid to late 60s. i might not be going the actual work by then, unless they give me two new knees and a new back. If I can find some quality guys to work for me, and i can trust them, then they can do the work and I'll check in to see how they are doing. maybe have multiple crews if it works out right. i know right now, people want my face on the job, and my work in the end. i can't think of letting someone else be on one of my jobs right now without me there to see that it's done my way.
