How Do You Deal With Sore Fingers And Broken Nails

I always battle cracked finger tips in the cold weather, but this year it has been particularly brutal with nails tearing off too (doesn't help I keep hitting them with the hammer). The most dreaded time of the month is when it's time to clip the fingernails as the finger tips always crack open soon after. How about it-any tips other than "get a desk job"?

Re: How Do You Deal With Sore Fingers And Broken Nails

You need to increase your omega-3 essential fatty acids. Start taking fish oil pills. Make sure you get DHA as one of the listed fatty acids. Whatever the recommended dose is, double it. Don't go for the cheapest brand - go to a health food store and get a better brand. Your burps will taste fishy if you don't combine it with food.

Eat more of the following:

1. Fish
2. Navy or great northern beans (soup is good)
3. Soy of any kind (tofu, soy milk, tempeh)

Do this religiously for 1 month. You will see such a difference that you'll keep doing it. As the weather gets warmer, your need for omega-3's decreases but don't cut them out altogether.

Pay more attention to your diet. Take a daily vitamin. Use a handcream like Eucerin for a while, every time after you wash your hands.

And stop hitting yourself with a hammer.

Mary Kay has a product called extra emoliant night cream. I it a cross between a gel and a cream. Put some on your hands after washing, while still wet. Works wonders!

I'm with Susan, diet ( you can get the omega-3 in vitamins ) and cows milk for the nails, I'm a recovering gallon of milk a day guy, never broke a bone other than fingers and toes, I should have, my brother and sister are not milk drinkers, they've had all types of broken bones. And my nails break nail clippers (not kidding).

I would go with the diet as well. In the mean time(don't know if the MaryKay thing is serious) there is a product called Cow Cream it was origanaly for Cows utters here in MA it's in almost every drug store the jar is painted like a cow (black and white). It Will, at least, help with the skin.

Bag Balm
Seriously, I use it when I have to work with concrete. Works great.

I always had the best luck with Neutragena Nowegian formula hand cream. Nothing else has been close. It supposedly was developed for Norwegian fisherman...very heavy duty.

I use a generic cow udder cream picked up from the local Fleet Farm. Works fine, cheap and the tub lasts a while.

Re: How Do You Deal With Sore Fingers And Broken Nails

after weeks of trying to get my winter hands smooth again with little success, while at the mall in gainesville last week, used a dead sea salt scrub for a few minutes to take the dead skin off, then used their hand cream. fixed almost right there. second day, all fixed. i think the key is getting the dead skin off. i wouldn't have believed it, but it worked for me. wife says alot of places have the salt scrubs alot cheaper than what i paid.

I am also with the diet crowd. I was going to school for dietetics but chose to be outside instead. Eat a good diet!! For more omega-3 any cold fish has a good source and almonds too. You can eat them throughout the day...yummy.
As far as your hands lanolin oil/cream is really good as well.

Re: How Do You Deal With Sore Fingers And Broken Nails

I use lubriderm intense skin repair and it works great. if I slack off for a little bit and get some cracks I super glue them and that helps keep them from getting worse.
