Time.

Lack of Temerity.

Lack of Controversial attitude.

Know-How in said Profession.

Willingness to become one.

Among other factors as well I am sure.

(All of the prerequisites EXCLUDE me for sure!!)

I like to keep a pretty small "staff" of volunteer moderators. I point this out because a lot of sites this large can have 100 moderators instead of just 10. I try to keep things as simple as possible both on how many we have and how we enforce the rules.
Also, unlike a lot of other sites I try to leave very little gray areas as to what is and is not allowed. We basically run everything through our Posting Rules and then act accordingly. That way everything is as fair as possible.

That being said ... this is pretty close to accurate

When the time comes when we feel that we need more help (which isn't often) I basically look at the current members and try to find people with solid posting records, respect in the community, and a great attitude.

I know I have to keep turning down job offers for moderator from CT, but I tell them over and over get a real dental plan and we will talk.
