How Do I Know An Employer Is Legit?

I am looking into getting a contractor job. I have applied for a few and expect responses soon.

I was just wondering after hearing a few horror stories about people who are employed by people to do work and then the employer ups and leaves without paying the money, how do you know if your employer is legit?

Are there certain pieces of paper to sign? Is there particular things I should look for? If he doesn't ask me for particular information should I be suspicious about it?

Thanks for any info.

I don't know where you are, but in Ca. you can check a contractors license and worker's comp info on the contractor board's website. MAKE SURE YOU ARE COVERED BY WORKER'S COMP. I would start there. Then if you get hired, they should have you fill out at least a W-4, which gived them your tax withhilding info...how many dependants you claim and all that. They should want a copy of your driver's license and social security card.

Where do you get a contractor job? Don't you just hire yourself?

I think he's from the UK area, and just struggling with the terminology. Don't sweat it.

Don't know about in the states but in the UK you can check a companies account at companies house. If they aren't registered I'd get a signed personal guarantee for the fee and proof of address.
