How To Bleed Older Single Action Hyd. Cyliender?
I have this posted in a few other places with no respose, figured I throw it up here too since we have some heavy eq operators and dump dudes
![]() Finally got my cylinders back today and remounted on the truck. Down fall to these older cylinders is they do not have the top bleed screw to allow air to escape like the newer cylinders do and even guy at hyd shop said it was going to be a pita trying to get all the air out, so here I am looking for the guys that have been there done that. the cylinders are 4 telescoping sections. The driver side unit is working properly as it extends the bottom most cylinder first, then the next and then the next, etc...like it did before I removed cylinder to have fixed. The pass side on the other hand is being stubborn. When raising bed the 2nd to bottom part extends first and once that tops out the next smaller cylinder just starts to turtle head, then the bed kinda drops back down on that side while the what should be first section to extend-pops outta the case and "catches up" so to speak, then it starts extending in sequence as it should. I did notice also when raising the joints on the telescopic arms were not at same height...obviously due to pass side not rasing as it should, but once at full extension they are matching...it;s just the process of rasing they are out of synch with driver side acting like it should. When lowering the unit, it will not gravity feed itself back down like it used too. Obviously everything is new and tight so I can kinda understand that, but I still think air in the system has more to do with it. I literally have to tug down on pass side of box and once it hits a certain point...it falls/collapses cylinder a good deal until it obviously hits the fluid part and stops, then it will slowly go down as it should. One other thing i noticed is the biggest part of the telescoping section is not fully seating/retracting and bed itself is hovering approx 1" above frame mounts/frame seat box rests on. Is this also because everything is new, or something I should take back upto shop and have them look at. We have a long weekend so would like to bleed the system the best I can if it's possible to eliminate any air pockets in case I have to take this back upto the shop and see why cylinders are not fully retracting. thanks and sorry for the long post, just trying to get all the info out there to better explain the problem i'm having. Edit: After doing some reading I am going to lossen the head nut on the cylinder that is not extending in sequencec and see if that helps, think packing may be too tight. Still looking for help on bleeding. Josh |

It's messy, but you can use the packing nut to bleed that air out of.

Re: How To Bleed Older Single Action Hyd. Cyliender?
well, it's parked on gravel and I've already got a heck of a mess from leaking prior to getting cylinders rebuilt. I assume I loosen the heck out of the very top section of the telescoping cylinder?
