Home Show Give Aways & Gimicks

What can we have in our booth, and or give away that will bring people in?
So far on the chalkboard we have:

Candy - (I shot that one down)
Coupons for our own company (how much?)
Pens, other random junk with our name on it
Guy making balloon animals (my window supplier suggested that one )

Contest, Throw a velcro ball at a velcro wall, if you stick it on particular spots you get coupons for our company $200-$800

Offer a certain discount, or number of free windows to anyone who signs up for an estimate at the home show. or Free gutters with the purchase of gutter guards. Free gutters with vinyl siding job etc

I was also thinking I should be trying to attract kids too so they drag their parents over. Lets hear some feedback

I got 2 shows in April, I don't give candy, when I did I watched people unwrap it and drop wrappers on the floor in my area.
I give out carpenter pencils, with RED lead. I joke with the people that they are for marking mistakes. Anything to start a conversation. Pencils cost me 26 cents apiece. When you raffle or do contests you get a lot of tire kickers, not so good for remodelers.

Re: Home Show Give Aways & Gimicks

I'd go with the candy. Kids love candy, parents follow kids. You said so yourself and it's true.

We also set up a gutter leaf guard display with some water running down a little roof littered with debris. It's visual and audio. Men and kids are genetically disposed to be attracted to running water.

Both will get folks to at least look your way, giving you a chance to engage them and measure their level of interest (if any).

And keep a broom behind the scene to sweep up during slower times.

Oddly enough we sell very little of the gutter guard but the display usually generates a kitchen or bath remodel. They stopped because the water drew their attention, then as long as they were there.....

Good Luck
Dave

Flat plastic bags with handles and your logo would be popular with people collecting literature, including yours. Pencils are a better option than pens for homeowners, make sure they have erasers. Renting a popcorn cart and making popcorn is cheap, and will bring kids dragging their parents for a bag of popcorn.

Dave, did you make it yourself or did you buy it somewhere?

I'll give you the real answer. I am kind of a home show junkie and the universal "hey check us out method" seems to be hot women in sexy clothes. It works for me.

Re: Home Show Give Aways & Gimicks

I've never done home shows but one company I worked for did a local parade every year. They would throw out water bottles, like the kind you use when you are workign out or playing basketball. That actually worked, people would call a year later and when I asked how they heard about us they'd say they had a water bottle with our name on it.

I guess the answer really is you want to give them something they will keep around for awhile. Water bottles, calculators, mousepads, calenders. Just brain storming.

If you offer laminated glass, I was thinking a cool prop that may get losts of lookers would be to install a laminated glass window into a section of wall. Set up a pendulum made of rope, and a 2"x4" stud that you can release from a fixed height that you have already proven to not damage the glass, then let it release and hit the glass. Do this every half hour, with a sign that says "Next Hurricane at XX:00"

You could put up a cycle counter. Have visitors fill out their info on a card, with a guess on the number of 2"x4" studs hitting at "hurricane force" that is would take to break the glass. Offer a prize for the winner (some type of discount).

When the glass never breaks, contact each entrant, and explain that since the glass NEVER broke, the only fair thing to do is to offer the prize to all the entrants.

We always have candy. It's good for the kids, some parents, and yourself when your mouth gets dry talking to all the people. I also give pencils and pens with my name on them. One year I gave a get away weekend and got a lot people signing up and all they wanted is the trip. I would never do that again. I'll rather talk to 10 people looking to buy what I sell than 50 looking to win a trip.

Re: Home Show Give Aways & Gimicks

WE gave away a few Ipods last year. I talked to, and weeded thru, a bunch of worthless leads.

We've got a few carry-overs from last year- Pens and Magnets.
Both are cheep ($.11-.20 a piece).

We're also asking our suppliers for T-shirts to hand out if folks get into a discussion. It's really more of a way of trying to draw our suppliers in to support us.

HTH,
~Matt

Why give away anything? How about a huge sign that says "No free candy, no free pencils, no free yo-yos -- Only stop here if you are interested in a great deal on the best quality windows sold."

You need to have hot girls wearing tool belts that way everyone will think they will do the work.

Face painting for the kids, the parents have to wait in line and talk to you. If the parents don't talk to you kick their kid out of the line. Make sure the kids know why they are not getting their face painted!

I never tried the idea, let me know how it works.

BTW, whatever you give them you will find in the garbage. People love to collect free stuff, you could hand out scraps of vinyl siding with your business card taped to it.

If you want a crowd at your booth get a popcorn machine and give away bags of popcorn. Better to be the booth dong it than the booth beside the guy doing it, don't ask how I know that.
