Hilti Zip Toggle Vs. Wingit
Grab bar install. No backing. Can open the backside of one wall but not the other.
Question is how many of you have used both and which one would you prefer? I've used many zip toggles and they are very strong but never used wingits. |

Re: Hilti Zip Toggle Vs. Wingit
If I couldn't attach a grab bar to a stud, I'd span 2-3 studs with a 1x of some design and attach the grab bar to it. Make it decorative and try to make it look like it belongs.
Attaching a grab bar to sheetrock or plaster will get somebody hurt.

no good alternative. When you put the blocking in the first wall you should be able to get a feel for the drywall installation. http://www.wingits.com/documents/CONFIDENTIA1.pdf You can read the UL tests, I did my own standing on one and bouncing my 180 lbs on it.

Re: Hilti Zip Toggle Vs. Wingit
The Hilti zip anchors are rated for some serious loads if I recall. I think their strongest rating is with 5/8" rock, but the 1/2" is not shabby.
Is the substrate behind the tile drywall or cement board? That might make a big difference in rating with any anchor.

Re: Hilti Zip Toggle Vs. Wingit
I'm going to order a variety of wingits to keep on hand and will let you know how it works out later this week. I like the fact that they are stainless.
Thanks for the replies! |

Re: Hilti Zip Toggle Vs. Wingit
Did that job yesterday. Installed 2 -18'' grab bars, Wingits performed as well as they stated. Also used the Zircon model 520 studfinder to scan through ceramic tile and it worked great! As with Wingit system you stay away from them.
Greg, it was drywall, and if it was cement board those thing would never come out. Neo, thanks for the heads up on those wingits Did explain to HO they are only as strong as the wall and 2x backing is the way to go. |
