HGTV Shows
Those HGTV shows are informative somtimes but they make us look like crooks. Iwonder if I can sub out some of my work to them. They should make a reality show of where a HO tries to really get something done at those prices like deisign on a dime and see what reactions and quality they would get from legit and wannabe contractors.

Re: HGTV Shows
Those "design on a dime" shows are mostly de-clutter and a paint job. Those are harmless. It's "Flip That House" that drives me nuts.

Re: HGTV Shows
I love the ones that do bathrooms. Paint some walls, put in some laminate flooring and new fixtures and call it a REMODEL. Total price $2000! HO saved $20,000 by doing it themselves.
Wake up DIY network, that ain't a remodel. Thats a facelift.

Re: HGTV Shows
Actually, behind the scenes there are a lot of costs factoring in - paying contractors to perform (hidden) work, paying huge electric bills, paying advertising fees to TV stations for products, paying many TV employees to setup scenes, to shoot film, to edit film, & to air it in just 30 minutes of air time slot, then TV shown ads must pay to the channel TV/owner, then marketing companies paying to parent TV companies, TV companies paying contractors, and then they paying insurance, and paying for materials, transportation of setup equipment to TV stations, etc...and ...etc.. and etc... and the list goes on!
In summary, in 30-minute show of a small house showing HO savings of that fricking $20K turned out to be... at least a $100K money or more in exchanging hands for all profits, all costs, all expenses, all overheads, all salaries, etc. between ALL parties, ALL companies and ALL people involved in just making that damn short TV show!! It's a ridiculous marketing TV business/show of 21st century! It's faked, it's mis-leading, and it makes every naive home owner believes in the IMPOSSIBLE! It all starts out because some of them think it's going to be so easy, and easy-money... Some of them, usually have no idea of material's real costs, and hire cheap labor that butchers the work, or don't show up.

We have the same sort of thing here in the UK.; I expect the researchers for the show deliberately choose the flippers who are likely to f*** up big time, but who none-the-less always seem to be able to get the whole house sorted out in the last quarter of the show (and seem to be able to get the money to do so from somewhere too) John

Re: HGTV Shows
I restore old houses. I use the term "restore" specfically to distinguish from "renovate" or "flip" because what I do bears no ressemblance to what you see on those shows. I do a full gut down to the studs, reinforce structure, rebuild damaged structure, re-wire, re-plumb, re-hvac, re-insulate, then all new surfaces (ceilings, walls, floors), new kitchens and baths, fixtures and trim.
Then I flick on one of those flipping shows and some guy's planning on making $100k profit in six weeks with a coat of paint and some laminate flooring. And two thoughts go through my mind - either it doesn't work out and it serves him right, or it does and it's downright criminal. |

Re: HGTV Shows
I have to hand it to you guys who deal directly with home owners. I am a third generation framer. My whole life I have done nothing but new homes. We see the home owners often but any changes come from the builder. I have a buddy that I was with while he was dealing with a home owner. This guy was complaining about using 2x6 studs to support a second floor. I would have lost it right there. I just don't know how you guys do it. Its like trying to explain quantum physics to a kindergarten class.

![]() I've said it before, Amy Matthews is the devil... She has that bathroom remodeling show on DIY, and she's hacking something up in every episode. The best line I heard was the other day when addressing the copper supply and PVC DWV systems... She said," Alright, all we have to do is the connect all the new plumbing in the basement. It should be really easy. " She was speaking to a numbskull housewife who earlier demonstrated her inability to simply swing a hammer. I like laughing at the flipper shows.

Re: HGTV Shows
I Still want to see Amy Matthews in noting but a hard hat and a nail bag! I like to watch those shows just so I can laugh at the ****ty work I see them do. I saw one time they couldnt buy a long enough section of laminate counter top at homo deblows so they butted two together at the right side of the sink, that they put a big fat bead of sillycone on. I hope those guys smoke crack or something, so they at least have a good excuse for that crap.

Re: HGTV Shows
Just what we need, 2 of the 3 worst things for the construction industry joining forces.
What are these things? (1.) DIY tv shows that claim to educate HO's but instead drive industry pricing to crap because they don't tell true pricing on the show. (2.) These god forsaken lead services that degrade the industry by leading a HO to think they are doing them a service by driving the industry pricing to crap. Now we have to raise prices to cover losses in advertising budgets due to unethical business practices of lead services. (3.) Illegals coming into this country driving prices down by making enough money to feed themselves for the week and then sending $100 to Ole Mex to revive the Mexican economy. I'm done ranting now......

Re: HGTV Shows
So there are a few others around here who watch those shows... Now I don't feel as much like a sissy! I actually first turned them on to see where the HOs were getting all their ideas and "knowledge" I was always hearing about.
There is one show where the designer has a professional painter that does the work. But most of the others are diy where the HOs or host, (who looks like they just stepped off a fashion runway) daintily picks up a roller, brush, or whatever and pretends to know what they're doing. Sometimes, out of the corner of the shot, you can see where they got paint all over the ceiling! One of the biggest annoyances to me tho, is the PRODUCT PLACING! The camera zooms in on a can of Behr and holds the shot as its being opened. Then, guess what we get to hear over and over? "But they used it on HGTV, so it must be good".

Re: HGTV Shows
i respect the diy spirit in people. i see nothing wrong with attempting projects but the shows go way overboard with how "easy" some projects will be. they kinda poo poo on the years of experience it takes to do something thats is proper and also looks good. the house flipping shows are a great example of that. i love "property ladder" because of the constant train wrecks and clueless flippers
